DescriptionIncumbents of this position will be the first line of security for State Government Buildings, screening and monitoring deliveries, mail, vehicles and people prior to gaining access to the facilities.Incumbents will operate in a politically sensitive environment and will need the ability to diffuse tense situations, manage crowds demanding public access, and handle disgruntled subjects in a professional and courteous manner. Substantial interpersonal skills are required.While sworn members of the New York State Police will be in close proximity and may be called to checkpoints when necessary, they will not be stationed full time. An understanding and ability to apply Criminal Procedure Law and citizen rights will be necessary.DutiesOperate various types of screening equipment, including walk‑through and hand‑held magnetometers.Utilize the computerized "dock master" delivery program and coordinate with Office of General Services (OGS) personnel to verify delivery documents and loads.Conduct secondary checks of individuals entering checkpoints, including hand‑held device screening and pat‑down searches.Identify dangerous objects in parcels, briefcases, backpacks, and equipment entering State Government Buildings using electronic detection and imaging equipment.Develop aptitude for using screening devices that distinguish between types of materials, identify illegal and prohibited items, and seize them when necessary.Participate in training and use discretion to make decisions regarding materials or questionable packages, determining when to delay or detain packages or persons for K‑9 searches or further processing.Conduct daily inspections and testing of equipment, assess operability, perform troubleshooting and testing, and coordinate repairs with certified professionals.Participate in training on weapon concealment techniques and apply confidential knowledge to daily screening duties.Maintain awareness of notices and bulletins regarding fraudulent identification and apply techniques to identify fraudulent IDs.Monitor scheduling of large groups on State property and adjust checkpoint staffing based on traffic flow throughout a shift.Monitor activities of individuals and groups, notifying supervisors of demonstration groups accessing State Government Buildings.Understand laws related to potential illegal activities on State property (e.g., activist group activities such as disorderly conduct, obstructing governmental administration, trespass); assess the need for additional staff or sworn officer presence.Take appropriate action to physically restrain persons creating an immediate risk to persons or property.QualificationsBe at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.Possess a valid New York State Driver's License.Must be physically able to perform the duties of this position.Preference will be given to candidates who currently possess a valid security license.Minimum qualifications must be met by the closing date of the posting.Qualified candidates are considered for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, gender identity and expression, disability, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, military or veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
