This employee, functioning at a trainee level is responsible for enforcing rules, regulations, and state law necessary for the control and management of offenders and the maintenance of public safety. This employee is responsible for following safe work practices and maintaining safe environments in compliance with established standards, regulations and generally accepted practices.ResponsibilitiesResponsible for knowing the locations and behaviors of clients at all timesProactive positive involvement and interaction with clients during their day-to-day programming and identified service activitiesResponsible for interaction with clients to facilitate the development or improvement of life skills and social skillsPerforming a variety of program activities such as wake-ups, showering, meals, snacks, recreational planning and participations, administering of medicationsAssisting co-workers and clients in maintaining a clean, safe, orderly environmentAssisting, and when identified, performing client tasks to ensure clean, safe environmentResponsible for responding to crisis episodes clients may experience in a supportive, empathetic, respectful, and professional mannerResponsible for assisting in groupsCommunicating with co-workers and the public professionally, courteously, and politelyProviding accurate and timely feedback to supervisor and co-workers with regard to client behaviors, responsiveness to programming and other services and treatment.Documenting all service delivery and daily programming on the appropriate record including OIS completely, accurately and according to timelinesParticipating in all scheduled meetings and trainingParticipation in scheduled supervision to review work performance and any identified goals for professional improvementFollowing directions of supervisors promptly, accurately, and completelyRequired to attend and successfully complete the Juvenile Correctional Officer Academy as scheduledKnowledgeable of program policies and proceduresMay be scheduled to work any shift as assignedLearns to implement training material, post orders, administrative regulations, log entries, and/or memorandaLearns to obtain information from previous shift regarding activities occurring on that shiftLearns to conduct and assists with intake/discharge procedures for offendersTestifies at internal disciplinary hearings and in courtLearns to model appropriate personal and social living skills when interactive with offendersHandles and operates security/communication equipment as directed and in a manner that is consistent with policy, procedure and state low and ensures public safetyLearns to report damaged or missing items or other noticed irregularitiesLearns to perform safety and sanitations inspectionsPerforming other job duties as assignedRequired Skills/AbilitiesKnowledge of corrections security, treatment, and supportive program operationsKnowledge of policy directives of the agency and pertinent sections of the West Virginia CodeAbility to interact positively with staff, inmates and the general publicAbility to conduct correct contraband searchesAbility to use computer terminal for entry and retrieval of dataAbility to be a team player and work with diverse populations.Ability to resolve offender problems and conflicts and handle requestsEducation and ExperienceRequires Highschool Diploma/G.E.D. or 0-1-year experience; Prefers Associate degree in Corrections, Criminal Justice or related field; Prefers 21-years of age and above; Previous experience with target population preferred. Must be able to graduate academy; years of service at YSS or prior direct experience may be considered along with additional skills and abilities.
