Summary
School Crossing Guard
School Crossing Guards are responsible for ensuring the safe crossing of school children and other pedestrians at designated school zones crossings. This position promotes the safety of students traveling to and from school by monitoring traffic flow, controlling pedestrian movement, expediating school bus ingress/egress and maintaining a visible and professional presence during assigned times. This position's primary purpose is to protect children from traffic hazards and enhance the overall safety in their assigned areas.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide a safe path for school children to cross streets at designated intersections.
- Inform school children and other pedestrians about safe crossing practices.
- Provide traffic direction and control when required to expediate the ingress and egress of School Buses dropping off or picking up students.
- Report dangerous situations and erratic driver behaviors to law enforcement or supervision.
- Remain alert and observant of traffic conditions, weather, and other factors which may impact the safety of students and pedestrians.
- Utilizes all assigned safety equipment when conducting crossings or assisting with traffic flow.
- Must be able to perform their duties without direct supervision and exercise independent judgement in completing assignments.
Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent oral and communication skills.
- Ability to communicate and provide detailed instruction clearly and confidently to individuals or large groups.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications:
- High School diploma, GED, or higher level of education.
- Successfully pass traffic control and school crossing guard certification courses.
- Prior law enforcement of traffic control experience preferred.
Supplemental Information:
- Must be able to hold and lift a handheld sign weighing approximately 2 pounds for extended periods of time (3–10-minute intervals)
- Work in a variant of temperatures and situations based upon weather and time of year.
- Must be able to stand and walk for two or more hours at a time.
Requirements:
- Must have the legal right to work in the United States.
- Must not have any felony convictions or been arrested for crimes against children.
- Valid Florida Driver's License.
- Able and willing to work outdoors and in inclement weather.
- ***Physicians certification verifying ability to perform essential functions would be required***

- Must be appropriately dressed and groomed.
- Reports to work promptly and properly prepared, notifying supervisor of intended absences.
- Acts in a professional manner, following established protocols and procedures.
An oral board with job-related questions and/or scenarios will be administered on a date specifically set with all potential candidates notified at least three days in advance of the specified date. The oral board passing score will be 80% or higher. The candidate with the highest score may be offered the position. The Sheriff reserves the right to make selections from internal or external sources.
