The DepartmentThe Department of Kinesiology is housed within the School of Science & Technology and offers a cross-disciplinary curriculum that addresses human movement across the life span from sociocultural, biological/physical, behavioral, and humanistic perspectives, with attention given to the unique and common needs of all people in a wide variety of contexts and conditions. The recently revised curriculum prepares graduates to apply kinesiological principles to the acquisition, performance, and refinement of motor skills and to the use of physical activity as an educative tool and medium for fitness and wellness.
To promote academic excellence, the Department actively recruits students from a range of backgrounds, including but not limited to local community college students, first generation college students, dual language learners/students, and Pell eligible individuals. The Department of Kinesiology serves approximately 300 majors, who follow one of three concentrations: Exercise Science/pre-Physical Therapy, Interdisciplinary/pre-Occupational Therapy, and Lifetime Physical Activity: Fitness and Wellness. The Department provides students with a broad interdisciplinary understanding of human movement. Our graduates work as teachers, fitness and wellness coaches, allied health professionals, and pursue graduate degrees.

Duties of the PositionResponsibilities may include teaching undergraduate kinesiology, general education, and/or physical activity courses. Assignments may include a combination of the following
- Physical activity courses in weight training, yoga, Pilates, group fitness, team and individual sports, swimming, martial arts, self-defense, and various & individual sports.
- General education course KIN 217, Personal Fitness and Wellness.
- Kinesiology undergraduate courses such as adapted physical activity, first aid and CPR, musculoskeletal injuries, elementary school physical education, foundations of kinesiology, motor development, and medical terminology.
Professional QualificationsTo be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have :
- For physical activity courses: Master’s degree in Kinesiology, Physical Education, or related field; or appropriate training/certification for the activity being taught; or demonstrated mastery/competency in activity being taught
- For kinesiology lecturer and laboratory courses: A Master’s degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Physical Education, or related field.
For KIN 446, Exercise Instruction , certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (Strength and Conditioning Specialist CSCS) or National Academy of Sports Medicine (Performance Enhancement Specialist PES).
Preferred Criteria
- For physical activity courses: record of successful teaching of the activity at the college level
- For kinesiology undergraduate, general education and laboratory lecturers
- Certification in personal training, fitness instructor, swimming instructor, strength and conditioning, exercise specialist and/or registered clinical exercise physiologist.
- Preference given to candidates with demonstrated excellence in college teaching and/or relevant industry experience and appropriate certification.
Rank and SalaryFull-time is a 15-unit workload per semester. Actual salary is dependent upon the number of units assigned, educational preparation, and availability of funds subject to any CSU system faculty contract salary increases.
- Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.
- Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $4,530 - $6,056 per full-time month.
- The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salary range indicated above is prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
- Selection as a candidate in the applicant pool, does not guarantee employment. Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon department needs and funding.
- Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis.
- Relocation expenses will not be provided for temporary faculty appointments.
- Expenses incurred to attend an interview for temporary faculty positions are not reimbursed by the University.
