    PSYCHIATRIST
    Physician- Specialty Services
    Student Health Center

    Salary Range : $13,732 - $26,726/Monthly (Budgeted Hiring Salary: $21,667 - $24,167/Monthly)

    Work Schedule : Full-time, Monday - Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. alternating Friday off, hybrid option available; exempt classification.

    Essential Functions : The Student Health Center (SHC) provides high-quality, affordable health care and health education for the students of Cal State LA to preserve and enhance their potential for academic success and personal development. In support of this mission and under direction of the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the Psychiatrist provides compassionate and culturally competent psychiatric care to students and participates in other professional and departmental activities as assigned. The incumbent evaluates and diagnoses mental health problems; orders and interprets diagnostic tests as needed; prescribes medication when needed and follows up on treatment; counsels patients; provide mental health crisis intervention and management when needed; refers to and consults with other professionals and providers as needed; provide consultation and expert opinion; collaborates with others in CAPS in the care of patients; participate in the SHC’s continuous quality improvement activities; provides evaluation of mental status; diagnoses psychiatric conditions according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) criteria; performs clinical evaluations, detailed intake assessments and appropriate tests to diagnosis and manage psychological and psychiatric conditions; develops treatment plans for patients; provides consultation regarding advisability of treatment with various therapeutic options including psychiatric medication and the management of patients with chronic psychiatric conditions; provides immediate care for acute psychiatric conditions including appropriate arrangement of hospitalization through appropriate community resources; establishes, diagnose, and document the health care plan and prognosis using Problem Lists and Medication Lists; facilitates continuity of care, document all care in SHC Electronic Health Records; maintains strict patient confidentiality; advises staff regarding use of appropriate community resources for patients who may need long-term counseling and/or psychiatric care; provides counseling for patients concerning their psychiatric condition; participates in Quality Assurance activities; participate in case conferences with CAPS; utilizes accepted professional practice guidelines for general psychiatry and observes the ethics and standards of the American Psychiatric Association and the California Medical Association to diagnose, prescribe, and manage medications for the treatment of psychiatric disorders of CSULA patients; assists CAPS and SHC develop and implement processes for the provision of mental health care to the campus community. Modalities may include: motivational interviewing, CBT techniques, supportive psychotherapy and psycho educational groups, etc.; and provides Emergency/Disaster care during a campus disaster.

    Required Qualifications & Experience : Graduation from a medical school and completion of one or more residency programs and/or fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent in a specialty appropriate to their assigned specialty duties. The incumbent must possess* and maintain: A valid license to practice medicine in the State of California; current board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) specialty or subspecialty appropriate for their assigned specialty duties; a valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances; and current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties.*Note: In accordance with Executive Order 943 a physician can be given clinical privileges pending initial certification, but must be board certified as soon as possible, but no later than two years after the date of hire. The incumbent must have thorough knowledge to effectively apply principles and methods essential to psychiatry, and the diagnosis and treatment of common medical disorders, and in the assessment and response to emergency situations; of local, state, and federal laws and regulations pertaining to the medical field and psychiatry; and of applicable professional ethics and standards which include but not limited to the County Medical Society, California Medical Association, and the American Medical Association. The incumbent must have the ability and specialized skills to: serve as a mentor and resource consultant for other health center personnel and establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of medical practitioners and specialist, as well as students, faculty and staff. The incumbent must have a demonstrated interest and/or ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the California State University.     Desired Qualifications : Prior/current affiliation with a hospital or outpatient clinic. Experience working in a student health services setting combined with strong interest and knowledge in working with college-age patients; ability and specialized skills to serve as a mentor and resource consultant for other SHC personnel and maintain effective working relationships with others; and experience in use of electronic health recording system.
