    The Department

    The Psychology Department is one of the largest majors at Sonoma State University. The curriculum includes five breadth areas (Holistic, Clinical, Developmental, Social, and Physiological), core required classes, and electives. The department seeks to develop skills in psychological knowledge, applications, research methods, behavioral change processes, self-reflection, and diversity appreciation. We draw from our temporary part-time hiring pool to fill curricular needs in the major.

    Duties of the Position

    The Department of Psychology anticipates hiring temporary part-time lecturers to teach courses in one or more of the following areas, as well as courses in the applicant’s areas of expertise:
    • General Education (Introduction to Psychology; Social Psychology)
    • Core (Psychology of Self-Discovery; Research Methods)
    • Breadth: Holistic (Humanistic, Existential, & Transpersonal Psychology; Myth, Dream & Symbol; Psychology of Meditation; Psychology of Yoga; Health Psychology; Peak Performance Psychology; Jungian Psychology; Psychology of Religion; Ecopsychology; Positive Psychology)
    • Breadth: Clinical/Counseling (Child Psychopathology; Psychopathology; Introduction to Counseling; Depth-Oriented Psychotherapies; Introduction to Art Therapy; Behavioral Therapies)
    • Breadth: Developmental (Life Span Development; Social & Emotional Development; Child Development; Adolescent Development; Infant Development; Psychology of Family; Cognitive Development)
    • Breadth: Social/Personality (Psychology of Organizations; Multicultural Psychology; Psychology of Gender; Psychological Aspects of Disability; Personality; Diversity Leadership; Psychology of Diversity)
    • Breadth: Cognitive/Physiological (Human Sexuality; Sensation & Perception; Cognitive Psychology; Learning & Behavior; Physiological Psychology; Biofeedback, Somatics, & Stress Management)
    • Elective (Psychology of Self-Compassion; Careers in Psychology; History of Psychology)
    • Additional areas of psychological specialization based on the applicant’s expertise


    Expectations of lecturers include the following:
    • teach courses that follow department requirements for course format/content, as well as that follow university course requirements
    • hold posted office hours of one (1) hour per week per course
    • participate in program assessment data collection as requested and required
    • utilize SSU's online learning management system (CANVAS) and other educational technology as appropriate for teaching and program assessment purposes
    • respond to student needs in an equitable, timely, and appropriate manner
    • equitably promote student belonging, engagement, and success


    Professional Qualifications

    To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have:

    Required:
    • Master’s degree in Psychology, Social Psychology, Health Psychology, Counseling, Neuroscience, or Social Work
    • At least two semesters of university teaching experience in psychology, with evidence of teaching effectiveness and an active learning approach to teaching
    • Ability to work effectively with students of diverse backgrounds and perspectives
    • Ability to incorporate diverse cultural perspectives into course content delivered
    • Evidence of current knowledge and professional training in course fields of expertise

    Preferred:
    • Doctorate in Psychology, Social Psychology, Health Psychology or equivalent by time of appointment
    • Extensive university teaching experience
    • Ability to demonstrate currency in scholarly areas through professional development, conference presentations, publications, etc

    Rank and Salary

    Full-time is a 15-unit workload per semester. Actual salary is dependent upon the number of units assigned, educational preparation, and availability of funds subject to any CSU system faculty contract salary increases.
    • Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.
    • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $4,530 - $6,056 per full-time month.
    • The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salary range indicated above is prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
    • Selection as a candidate in the applicant pool, does not guarantee employment. Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon department needs and funding.
    • Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis.
    • Relocation expenses will not be provided for temporary faculty appointments.
    • Expenses incurred to attend an interview for temporary faculty positions are not reimbursed by the University.

    - Temporary Faculty with three-year contracts do not need to reapply.

    - Temporary Faculty who had a paid appointment during the prior academic year with your department (either one or both semesters); this includes Lecturers on the Re-Employment list are not required to apply through the Recruitment Pool unless they would like to be evaluated to teach additional courses, not currently designated as qualified to teach.
