    The University

Sonoma State University’s beautiful 274-acre campus is located in Sonoma County wine country, an hour north of San Francisco. The campus offers the ideal setting for teaching and learning and access to a community of rich cultural, environmental, and recreational opportunities. Founded in 1960, Sonoma State University is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University System. As members of the largest public higher educational system in the nation, we provide accessible, high-quality education to more than 6,000 students. Sonoma State University is proud to be a Hispanic Serving Institution committed to achieving the goals of equal opportunity and endeavors to employ faculty and staff reflecting the ethnic and cultural diversity of the region and state.

    The Department

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Sonoma State University (SSU) is committed to providing students with a high-quality education in mathematics and statistics, while also fostering a culture of inclusivity, diversity, and equity. The department offers a range of undergraduate programs that emphasize both theoretical and applied mathematics, statistics and data analysis, and Secondary Teaching preparation. The faculty is composed of highly qualified individuals from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds who are dedicated to sharing their knowledge and expertise with students.

Majors in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics may pursue a B.S. or a B.A. degree in mathematics or statistics, including preparation for secondary teaching. Minors in mathematics and statistics are also offered. In addition, the Department provides important courses in the University’s general education program and courses that support other majors. The Department is very engaged with K-12 schools and teachers in Northern California, including extensive, grant-funded professional development activities.

The Department’s objectives include providing students with a broad, fundamental background in mathematics or statistics and their applications to prepare them to work in education or industry, conduct research, or pursue graduate study. The Department’s faculty values an active and collaborative teaching and learning environment.

The department also offers opportunities for undergraduate research, allowing students to work alongside faculty on research projects. This experience provides students with valuable skills and knowledge that are highly sought after by employers in a variety of industries.

In addition to the strong academic program, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at SSU is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment. This commitment is reflected in the department's mission statement: “We invite and welcome students from all educational and cultural backgrounds to join us in creating an active, collaborative learning community that celebrates the complexity, beauty, and applicability of Mathematics and Statistics.” The faculty and staff are dedicated to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of the department, including recruiting and retaining students and faculty from underrepresented groups, promoting inclusive teaching practices, and creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all students.

Currently the department is engaged in a 5-year project promoting inclusive teaching practices and a welcoming and supportive environment for all students. The project is called Transformative Inclusion in Postsecondary STEM: Towards Justice (TIPS Towards Justice), and aims to increase the participation and success of Latinx students in STEM by transforming STEM department cultures to become truly “Hispanic-Serving” by addressing persistent marginalization and underrepresentation of Latinx students in STEM-a necessary step if the talents of a growing Latinx population are to benefit the country.

In summary, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at SSU offers an academic program that emphasizes both theoretical and applied mathematics, statistics and data analysis, and Secondary Teaching preparation. The faculty are highly experienced and dedicated professionals who are passionate about teaching and research. The department is also committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, making it an ideal program for students and faculty who value these principles.
