    POSITION SUMMARY

    This is entry level work of routine difficulty in the operation of a large, complex wastewater treatment plant which includes cryogenic oxygen production, advanced chemical treatment, advanced sludge dewatering facilities and computer process control.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification.     • Participates in instructing and familiarizing apprentices and newly hired operators with the various aspects of plant operation
    • Performs chemical analysis to ensure it meets highest quality standards
    • Observes and reports any abnormalities in quality or equipment around the plant
    • Monitors injection well tests; inspects storage tanks around the plant
    • Assists in the preparation of various reports; documents sampling results on plant documents
    • Reads a variety of charts and meters; maintains accurate log sheet
    • Collects samples from different stages of treatment for chemical, physical, or biological analysis
    • Prepares work order requests to repair or calibrate plant equipment
    • Records and orders chemicals and supplies needed to test samples to analysis; receives and logs in all chemicals and supplies delivered
    • Assists in transferring chemicals from bulk tanks to day tanks, as needed
    • Attends department meeting and/or safety classes as requested
    • Ensures compliance with safety regulations and standard operating procedures, Federal, State, and County regulations
    • Monitors automated plant equipment through visual inspection for proper operating parameters and mechanical integrity; maintains a plant log detailing specific information
    • Operates and adjusts pumps, agitators, computers, valves, and other equipment in order to maintain the highest degree of treatment
    • Collaborates with maintenance staff on specific projects from an operational perspective; adjusts or bypasses specific areas, processes, or equipment to ensure consistent treatment, plant integrity, and safety as required.
    • Receives, tests, stores, monitors, changes, and returns liquid chlorine cylinders as needed.
    • Works around high voltage, rotating equipment and various hazardous chemicals.
    • Performs related work as required
    PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
    The position involves medium physical demands, such as exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

    1. Have graduated from a standard high school or possess an acceptable G.E.D. certificate from a recognized issuing agency.

    2. Have one (1) year of operating work experience in an activated sludge wastewater treatment plant. This experience must include sludge processing and chemical treatment including chlorination, polymers and other process control chemicals, and responsibility for preventive maintenance of equipment.

    3. Must possess a current State of Florida Class "C" Certified Operator's License in wastewater in compliance with chapter 17.16 of the Florida Administrative Code and all revisions thereof.

    4. Possess a Florida driver's license and have an acceptable driving record.

    As public servants, employees may be required to work immediately before, during, and/or after an emergency. All employees must be available and able to work assigned shifts as determined by their Department Heads.

    HOW TO APPLY/ VETERAN INFORMATION

    Depending on the number of applicants and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: Evaluation of Training and Experience, Oral Interview, Written Examination, or other assessment method. Applicants must attain a minimum score of 70 in each part of the examination in order to qualify. All successful applicants may be required to take a medical examination and/or pass a drug screening prior to appointment.

    An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes. To obtain veteran's preference, candidates MUST submit a copy of separation papers and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form ( J204 ) at time of application.
