    Atlanta Fire Rescue Training Academy (AFRTA) EMS Instructor

    General Description and Classification Standards

    Plans, delivers and evaluates emergency medical services, (EMS) classroom, laboratory, hospital and pre-hospital clinical instruction and provides these services and support activities required for optimal student learning and effective educational programming.

    Decision Making

    Uses independent judgment and discretion in managing subordinates including the handling of emergency situations, determining and deciding upon procedures to be implemented, setting priorities, maintaining standards and resolving problems.

    Leadership Provided

    Serves as a technical resource or mentor to other employees. May lead or instruct less experienced workers in high level or technical jobs.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully. It is not an exhaustive list. Knowledge of current best-practices for the EMS profession at all levels of credentials; knowledge of EMS regulations, policies and operating procedures; and knowledge of equipment and supplies used in emergency care of patients and victims of accidents. Assists with the development of EMS programs. Skill in communicating effectively and coherently with the 911 emergency center, other EMS units, public service agencies and publics using existing communications equipment; and skill in maintaining effective working relationships with other EMS agencies, government officials, the general public and other employees. Ability to remain calm in emergency and life-threatening situations, gather information from patients and bystanders through interviews, observation, physical assessments and use of diagnostic equipment such as a blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, and thermometer; and ability to operate an ambulance or other emergency vehicle for long periods of time during both day and night, in congested traffic and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow, and in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits.

    Minimum Qualifications, Education and Experience
    • Associate's degree or certification from a technical/vocational school in emergency medical services or a related field knowledge, skills and abilities for this job.
    • 1-3 years' of current advanced EMS education lead instructor teaching with appropriate clinical supervisory experience is required; or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the requisite.

    Preferred Education & Experience
    • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, pre-med, emergency medical service or a related field and 3-5 years' of current advanced EMS education lead instructor teaching with appropriate clinical supervisory experience is preferred.
    • Equivalent professional experience may be considered for substitution for the required degree on an exception basis.

    Licensures and Certifications

    Valid Georgia driver's license is required.

    State of Georgia certification as an EMS Instructor required.
