    The Position

    Bargaining Unit: Local 1 - Family and Children's Services Unit

    The Community Services Bureau in the Employment and Human Services Department is offering employment opportunity on hourly bases in a role for Associate Teacher - Project Substitute. This is a rewarding opportunity for individuals passionate to work with young children ages 0-5 years old in a classroom setting in state-of-the art licensed childcare facilities. The position is assigned to the Head Start/Early Head Start and/or Child Development Programs in the Community Services Bureau. These programs are designed to promote the social, emotional, cognitive, creative, physical and linguistic development of young children.

    The Associate-Teacher Substitute is authorized to provide services and instruction to children in pre-school and Infant/Toddler classroom settings. Under supervision, assists in planning, organizing and conducting variety of classroom activities for the children enrolled in the program.

    Incumbents in this class are exempt from the classified service and work in Federally and or State funded project positions administered by Contra Costa County.

    Typical Tasks

    • Assists in assessing needs of children enrolled in the program
    • Assists in organizing the children's learning environment
    • Assists in planning and implementing the developmental programs
    • Assists in working with parents in building a relationship of mutual respect and cooperation
    • Models appropriate behavior for the children and other adults
    • Makes verbal and written reports of suspected child abuse to Child Protective Services and reports unusual incidents to Community Care Licensing
    • Performs duties and responsibilities of the Teacher-Project during hours when the Teacher-Project is not assigned to the classroom
    • Reports issues of concern to the Site Supervisor
    • Performs other tasks as may be required for the efficient operation of the instruction program


    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency, or a high school proficiency certificate and successful completion of 12 semester units in Early Childhood Education/Child Development that meet the Commission on Teacher Credentialing requirements for the Child Development Associate Teacher permit. A copy of official transcripts must be sent as verification of completed units.

    Certificate Preferred: Possession of a Child Development Associate Teacher Permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing or a Contra Costa County Associate Teacher Temporary County Certificate.

    Special Requirement: As required by law, all appointees to this class must successfully pass a physical examination and fingerprint and tuberculosis clearances

    CONVICTION HISTORY

The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you have received a conditional job offer. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with Contra Costa County. If you accept a conditional job offer, the Human Resources department will contact you to schedule a fingerprinting appointment.

    DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
    All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
