    The Position

    The Board of Supervisors have authorized the following future salary increases:
    5% on July 1, 2023
    5% on July 1, 2024
    5% on July 1, 2025

    Bargaining Unit: Local 856 - LVN/Aide Unit

    Contra Costa County is offering an excellent employment opportunity to fill full and part time Orthopedic Technician positions assigned to the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center or Health Centers located in East, West and Central County of Martinez, CA.

    The Orthopedic Technicians are responsible for the application and/or removal of casts from patients in a hospital emergency room and/or orthopedic clinic environment, assistance with preparation of traction equipment, preparation of specialized equipment for use in orthopedic surgeries; and maintenance of inventory in the cast room. Incumbents apply and remove fiberglass and plaster casts and splints, and apply traction for hospitalized patients. In addition, they inspect traction (while in use) and report findings to a physician; prepare surgical suite for orthopedic surgeries by arranging appropriate equipment, and instruct nursing personnel in principles and maintenance of traction and perform other related duties.

    TENTATIVE EXAM DATE

    Training and Experience Exam: To Be Announced

    Typical Tasks

    • Prepares injured areas for cast application by covering with specified protective material
    • Wets, wraps and molds plaster bandages around area of fracture
    • Trims plaster using electric cutter
    • Removes whole and broken casts and alters position of cast to change setting of patient's limb or body part, as directed
    • Assembles wooden, metal, plastic or plaster material to make orthopedic splints
    • Assists orthopedic patients through all phases of clinic visit
    • Obtains parts for prescribed traction equipment
    • Visually inspects traction in use and reports findings to appropriate physician
    • Maintains traction during patient transfers
    • Instructs nursing personnel in principles and maintenance of traction
    • Prepares surgical suite for orthopedic surgeries by arranging appropriate equipment
    • Maintains cast room supply inventory
    • Cleans work area and tools
    • Provides and promotes excellent customer service for all internal and external customers
    • May attend surgical rounds


    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: Graduation from high school, G. E. D. equivalency or California High School Proficiency Certificate.

    License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Out of state valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License will be accepted during the application process.

    Certificates: Possess and maintain throughout the duration of their employment: a valid Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate issued by the American Heart Association.

    Experience: Six months of full-time experience in the application and removal of casts in a hospital, clinic or medical office setting, working directly in the treatment of orthopedic patients.

    Substitution for Experience: A valid Orthopaedic Technologist Certification issued by the National Board of Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists (NBCOT) OR completion of an Orthopedic Technician training program meeting the minimum standards set by the National Association of Orthopaedic Technologists (NAOT) may be substituted for the required experience.

    Other Requirements: A background investigation/fingerprint and/or physical exam may be required prior to the start of employment.

    A COMPLETED SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE IS REQUIRED. AN APPLICATION SUBMITTED WITHOUT THE SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE WILL BE CONSIDERED INCOMPLETE AND WILL THEREFORE BE DISQUALIFIED.

    Selection Process

Application Evaluation: Depending on the number of applications received, an Application Evaluation Board may be convened to evaluate and select the best-qualified candidates for invitation to the next phase of the examination.Training and Experience Evaluation: Consists of an evaluation of each candidate's relevant education, training and/or experience as presented on the application and supplemental questionnaire. (Weighted 100%) Candidates must receive a rating of at least 70, which may be an adjusted score, in order to be ranked on the employment list.
    The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.

    CONVICTION HISTORY
    After you receive a conditional job offer, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you have received a conditional job offer. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with Contra Costa County. If you accept a conditional job offer, the Human Resources department will contact you to schedule a fingerprinting appointment.

    DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
    All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
