    DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES:

    The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DHS operates as an integrated health system, operating 25 health centers and four acute care hospitals, in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails. Across the network of DHS' directly operated clinical sites and through partnerships with community-based clinics, DHS cares for about 800,000 unique patients each year, employs over 22,000 staff, and has an annual operating budget of 6.9 billion.

    Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings, to supportive housing.

    DEFINITION:
    Assists in cardiac catheterization by maintaining and operating a physiological monitoring recording system and related diagnostic equipment; conducts highly specialized non-invasive examinations of the heart.

    Essential Job Functions

    Connects patient to electrocardiographic monitoring system prior to catheterization or other procedures. These procedures include the full range of invasive types including HIS Bundle recording and those involving pacemakers.

    Calibrates and balances such equipment as intra-cardiac pressure recorders, transducers, digital analyzers, densitometers and other electronic diagnostic machines using standard tests and values.
    Monitors and records intra-cardiac pressures and cardiac tracings throughout catheterization procedures and advises the cardiologist of the existence and extent of abnormalities.

    Makes post-examination calculations from data gathered including that of valve areas, cardiac output (Fick and green dye method), cardiac index, oxygen uptakes, saturations and consumption, pulmonic resistance, systemic resistance and shunt flow by entering values into algebraic formulas.

    Assembles all calculations, recorded data and time sheets after the examination and prepares them into a final report for use by the cardiologist to determine the need for and advisability of performing surgery and the type and probable extent of the required surgery.

    Trains cardiology fellows and residents in the operation of pressure recorders and related equipment and in methods of calculating values.

    Requirements

    SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:
    Option I - Completion of a comprehensive program in cardiopulmonary or cardiovascular technology at an approved school* including clinical instruction in the maintenance and operation of physiological monitoring and other cardiac catheterization diagnostic equipment and the preparation of related reports.

    Option II - One (1) year of experience performing the duties at the level of the Los Angeles County Classification Cardiovascular Technician**.

    Desirable Qualifications:
    Current Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).

    PHYSICAL CLASS III - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
    *The comprehensive program in cardiopulmonary or cardiovascular technology must be accredited by Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

    **Experience at the level of the Los Angeles County Class of Cardiovascular Technician is defined as: assists in cardiac catheterization by maintaining and operating a physiological monitoring recording system and related diagnostic equipment; conducts highly specialized examination of the heart.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:
    This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience and desirable qualifications based on application information, weighted 100%.

    Credit will be given to applicants who possess additional experience in excess of the Selection Requirements.

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
    Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    The names of candidates receiving a passing score on the examination will be added to the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.

    No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION :
    Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

    VACANCY INFORMATION:
    The resulting eligible register from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services as they occur.
