ABOUT THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY: The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DHS operates as an integrated health system, operating 25 health centers and four acute care hospitals, in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings, to supportive housing.

DEFINITION: Develops, organizes, and conducts formal and informal physical therapy education courses and clinical training programs for students, interns, graduate physical therapists, and therapy assistants. Provides in-service training for physical therapy staff, physicians, nurses, allied health personnel and community agencies. Conducts training and evaluates its effectiveness in achieving educational objectives.
Essential Job Functions- Participates with the education coordinator or therapy chief, educational staff, allied health professionals, and affiliated educational institutions in defining educational goals, objectives, and standards for education programs.
- Plans, develops, implements, reviews, selects, monitors the training program curriculum, uses a variety of teaching methods and reference materials for patient education, in-service, or continuing and affiliate education programs, seminars and workshops.
- Provides instructions to therapists, or students by conducting training on patients in a medical setting such as acute medical, psychiatric, or rehabilitation hospital, out-patient clinics or in California Children's Services Medical Therapy Units.
- Participates with therapy supervisory personnel in planning and implementing evaluation criteria to measure the effectiveness of education and treatment training program to improve the education process.
- Annually establish student program for the year and selecting students from an affiliated education institutions; also planning, and scheduling physical therapy clinical fieldwork experience assignments for students.
- Conducts formal and informal instruction and demonstration sessions in support of general and specialized physical therapy educational programs, including preparation of lesson plans and selection of appropriate materials and teaching aids.
- Maintains responsibility for direct patient care through the provision of physical therapy evaluations and treatments for an assigned caseload of patients, as needed.
RequirementsMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: OPTION I: Graduation from a physical therapy curriculum acceptable to the Commission on Accreditation on Physical Therapy Education of the American Physical Therapy Association and approved by the Physical Therapy Board of California
-AND- Three years of experience in the practice of physical therapy one year of which must have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity. A Master's degree from an accredited* college/university in physical therapy, public health, special education or a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
OPTION II: Successful completion in a physical therapy school or schools of a resident course of professional instruction standards approved by the Physical Therapy Board of California
-AND- Three years of experience in the practice of physical therapy one year of which must have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity. A Master's degree from an accredited college/university in physical therapy, public health, special education or a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
LICENSE:A license to practice as a Physical Therapist issued by the Physical Therapy Board of California.
All required licenses and certifications must be active and unrestricted or your application will not be accepted. A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Physical Class III - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
Additional InformationSpecial Requirement Information:In order to receive credit for any college course work, or any type of college degree, such as a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, or higher in Physical Therapy, or license, you must include a legible copy of the official diploma, official transcripts, official letter from the accredited institution which shows the area of specialization; or copy of official license with your application

Examination Content:This examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience based on application information weighted at 100%.
Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

Eligibility Information:Applications will be processed on an

The names of candidates receiving a passing score on the examination will be added to the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.
