    Summary

    ABOUT THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE:
    The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is a full service agency that oversees the adult jail, provides patrol, criminal investigations, civil process and search and rescue operations. Special units include SWAT, Marine Patrol, ATV Patrol, Forest Patrol, along with five K9 teams. Founded in 1916 and today led by your duly elected Sheriff L. Shane Nelson, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office serves over 200,000 residents in Deschutes County.

    ABOUT THE JOB:
    This position provides professional nursing duties in a corrections setting that include physical assessments, verification of medication and treatment, TB testing, documentation of medical care, scheduling, and conducting sick calls. Will also be responsible for communicating with medical, mental health, and public health communities, alcohol and or drug detoxification, administering medications, scheduling out-of-facility physician and dental appointments, maintaining statistics, and resolving medical bills.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Provides non-emergency medical services during daily sick call in jail; takes requests for medical services; examines inmates as needed; dispenses treatment; administers medications and injections; collects laboratory samples.
    • Coordinates medical needs of inmates with jail providers; works with providers to assess and treat medical conditions.
    • Assesses medical needs and evaluates medical requirements of inmates.

    • Principles and practices of professional nursing.
    Skill in:
    • Responding to stress and medical emergencies with haste and sound judgment.
    • Maintaining medical records and writing clear and concise reports.
    • Communicating effectively in both oral and written form.
    • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with individuals, whether members of the public or coworker, from diverse groups and backgrounds.

    Compensation

    $7,161.24 to $9,596.79 per month for a 182.53 hour work month. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This union-represented position is available immediately.

    Nurses currently work 12 hour shifts and follow our Correction’s team schedule of 4 days on and 4 days off, however shifts may vary. May be required to work 8, 10 or 12 hour shifts including nights, weekends and holidays. Must be available for all shifts including day, swing, and/or graveyard.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Associates or Bachelor's degree in nursing;
    • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing;
    • OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.
    Must possess an Oregon State Registered Nurse license by date of hire.

    Preference will be given for :
    • A Bachelor's degree in nursing;
    • AND one year of experience in a hospital or physician's office. ICU, medical/surgical, or emergency room experience is helpful but not required.


    Necessary Special Requirements

    Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.

    Must pass a driving record review and criminal history background.
    • A current driver's license and the state of origin are required. Candidates who wish to be considered for this position must include an accurate driver's license number and state of origin on their application under the Personal Information section .
