The Position
Equipment Mechanics maintain, repair, and modify fleet equipment comprised of a variety of light, medium, and heavy automotive and maintenance equipment, landscape equipment, computerized testing equipment, and diesel-fueled electric power generators.
Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties described in the series concept at the advanced journey level, and in addition, either: 1) Function as a lead worker for lower-level skilled Equipment Mechanics on a regular basis by providing training and technical assistance, work assignment and review, and providing input to performance evaluations. Positions at this level are distinguished from the lower level of the series by the lead worker responsibilities for skilled Equipment Mechanic II's and journey level skilled trades workers; or 2) In a correctional environment, function as a lead worker for an inmate crew on a regular basis and document inmate performance through completion of periodic performance reports. Incumbents are also responsible for implementing security procedures which include securing the work area from unauthorized inmates and accountability for assigned inmates, staff, tools, and equipment. Supervision of a crew of inmates must be within the institution and must be a regular and recurring duty of a position to warrant allocation to this class.
The position is located at the Eastlake Regional Shop in Washoe Valley and is responsible for keeping equipment in the Division's fleet in good repair for daily operations and emergency response. This includes a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment. Repairs include, but are not limited to, engine repair or replacement, repairing and rebuilding brake systems, steering and suspension system components, differential and drive line components, servicing of automatic and manual transmissions, electrical and wiring systems. Duties also include repairing, maintaining, fabricating, and installing parts, components, and special use items. Incumbent will outsource certain repairs to contract vendors, purchase parts for jobs using an online procurement program, maintain records with fleet software, and coordinate with the regional team to prioritize fleet repairs. Keeping the fleet in safe operating condition is critical to daily operations and in effectively preserving and managing our assets. Incumbent will supervise one Equipment Mechanic II. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Completion of a recognized automotive/equipment repair apprenticeship program followed by one year of journey level experience equivalent to the Equipment Mechanic II; OR one year of experience as an Equipment Mechanic II in Nevada State Service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes Applicants must attach verification of successful completion of an apprenticeship program and/or experienced gained through an apprenticeship program at the time of application. Special Requirements A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. In addition, federal law required random testing for controlled substances during employment. Some positions require incumbents to furnish their own mechanic's tools. In order to meet the needs of each agency, some positions may require specialized background, consistent with the parameters of the class specification. Some positions require a valid Class A or B commercial driver's license at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Positions in the Division of Forestry must pass a physical agility test, medical examinations, and background investigations provided by the agency. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. Show moreThe presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.
European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.
Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
