    ABOUT LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. Through its integrated system of 25 health centers, four (4) acute care hospitals and expanded network of community partner clinics - DHS annually provides direct care for 600,000 unique patients, employs over 23,000 staff, and has an annual budget of over $6.9 billion.

    Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings to supportive housing.

    DEFINITION
    Provides basic nursing services to both child and adult inpatients or to children of preschool age in the custody of county day care nurseries.

    Essential Job Functions

    Depending on the area of assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Assists RN and Doctor during patient's clinic visits and appointments.
    • Escorts patients to axillary departments for diagnostic procedures: Laboratory, X-Rays, therapy, etc.
    • Monitors the patient's condition and reports any manifest change in condition to a registered nurse or physician.


    Requirements

    SELECTION REQUIREMENTS: Certification as a Nursing Assistant* by the State of California - AND- A certificate of completion of the Nursing Attendant Certification Training Program from the Los Angeles County College of Nursing and Allied Health. (CONAH)** -AND-Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) Program certificate issued by the American Heart Association. *** LICENSE(s) and CERTIFICATE(s) Required
    *To compete in this examination process, applicants must have current certification as a Nursing Assistant by the State of California -OR- have an equivalent certification issued by a State Government Board within the United States of America.

    Required license(s) and/or certification(s) must be active and unrestricted, or your application will not be accepted. Additionally, in order to receive credit for license(s) and/or certification(s) in relation to any desirable qualifications, the license(s) and/or certification(s) must be active and unrestricted.

    Information pertaining to the required Certification as a Nursing Assistant by the State of California
    Applicants who do not possess a Certification as a Nursing Assistant by the State of California at the time of filing may compete in this examination. However, their names will be withheld from the certification list pending receipt of the required Certification as a Nursing Assistant by the State of California.

    Applicants who are not certified as a Nursing Assistant by the State of California but have passed the Skills and Written Portions of the State exam must provide an official letter with your Official Score Report from the Nursing Assistant program or National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) verifying passing of both the Skills and Written portions of the State Competency Examination**. Those applicants who have an equivalent certification issued by a State Government Board within the United States of America at the time of filing may also compete in this examination; however, the names of such candidates will be withheld from the eligible list pending receipt of the required certification by the State of California.

    Applicants must ensure the License and Certification Section of the application is completed. Provide the title of the required license(s) certification(s), the certificate number, date of issue, date of expiration, and the name of the issuing agency for the required certification as specified in the Selection Requirements.

    PHYSICAL CLASS: IV - Arduous:
    Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces, and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION

    **Applicants must attach a legible copy/image of completion from the College of Nursing, such as a diploma, certificate, or official transcripts to their application at the time of filing or email the documents to the analyst within 7 calendar days from the application filing date. Applications submitted without the required evidence of the required documentation will be rejected.

    ***Applicants must attach a legible image of their current BLS for Healthcare Providers Certification issued by the American Heart Association to their application. Please include the exam number and the exam title in the Subject field of the email.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
    Credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications:
    • Volunteer or paid experience in an Acute care hospital or long-term facility.
    • Working in a healthcare office, answering a high volume of calls.


    Additional Information

    EXAMINATION CONTENT

    An evaluation of training and experience based upon application information, desirable qualifications, and supplemental questionnaire responses weighted 100%.

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher in the examination to be added to the eligible register.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION

    Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis, and those receiving a passing score will be added to the eligible register accordingly.

    The names of candidates will appear on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.

    Applicants who are successful in this examination and are added to the eligible register may not apply for and compete in this examination for twelve (12) months following the date of being placed on the eligible register. Applications received before expiration from the eligible register will be rejected.

    VACANCY INFORMATION

    The eligible register resulting from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services as they occur.

    AVAILABLE SHIFT

    Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
