    Job Location: This position is located at Hawthorn Children's Psychiatric Hospital, 1901 Pennsylvania Ave., St. Louis, MO 63133.

    Hawthorn Children's Psychiatric Hospital (HCPH) provides specialized care for children and adolescents diagnosed with mental illness. HCPH has both an Inpatient and a Residential Program. We are looking for a positive and energetic Recreational Therapy Coordinator who has an interest in supporting the Recreation Therapy Team and helping children with mental illness maximize their potential.

    Hawthorn Children’s Psychiatric Hospital uses the Sanctuary Model to guide our interactions with our teammates and the care we provide to our consumers in order to promote healing, safety, and nonviolence.

    • Plans, develops, and coordinates the Recreational Therapy Services provided to consumers in the Residential and Inpatient Programs at Hawthorn.
    • Orders and maintains supplies and equipment for the RT Department.
    • Provides direct supervision and/or training as well as oversight of all staff in the Recreation Therapy Department, including Recreation Therapists, Music Therapists, and Activity Aides.
    • Observes and monitors consumers in a wide variety of leisure activities and reports in Treatment Planning and Program Rounds for the Inpatient and Residential Programs.
    • Plans and administers therapeutic recreational activities in individual or group settings adapted to meet client needs and abilities as part of a treatment/rehabilitation program for a unit or treatment/rehabilitation area.
    • Participates in various meetings including (but not limited to) Clinical Management Committee, Patient Safety Meeting, facility work groups, and root cause analyses as needed.
    • Works with other managers of the facility to ensure compliance with Joint Commission and CMS Standards, regional, facility, and departmental policies and procedures.
    • Collects and monitors outcome data for the RT department, reporting quarterly to the facility’s Quality Council Meeting.
    • Plans and organizes special programming for the facility, including (but not limited to) Talent Shows, Art Showcases, programming during times there is no school.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • A Master’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation or any related field, such as Creative Arts, Therapy, Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Horticulture Therapy, Physical Education, or Drama Therapy. -OR-
    • A Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, or any related field AND five (5) years of post-degree professional experience in planning and administering a therapeutic program which involved developing and coordinating therapeutic activities for individuals with psychiatric disabilities, which includes two (2) years experience at a supervisory level
    • CTRS certification preferred
