    Position Description

    Tacoma Power’s Generation Section is seeking an Electrical Engineer ( Associate Power Systems Engineer, Senior or Power Systems Engineer, PE ) to join their team. This position provides electrical engineering technical services for capital and maintenance projects at Tacoma Power's hydroelectric and fisheries facilities. As a Professional Engineer, this position is expected to be a subject matter expert for operation, maintenance, repair, and improvement of Generation's electrical systems and equipment.

    This position supports the mission of the organization by ensuring continued availability of generating resources and fisheries operations.

    Responsibilities Include:
    • Participate on diverse working teams involved with the design, fabrication, installation, maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of fish facilities and hydropower plants.
    • Prepare, review and stamp calculations, drawings, reports, etc., related to electrical systems.
    • Prepare specifications and other engineering documents to procure and install a wide variety of electrical equipment and systems.
    • Plan and direct electrical equipment installation, assembly, and disassembly.
    • Troubleshoot equipment failures and perform root cause analysis.
    • Evaluate, select and specify the components required to refurbish and/or upgrade electrical equipment.
    • Represent the City at shop inspections and factory acceptance tests related to electrical systems.
    • Direct contractors and hydro project staff at facilities to accomplish equipment repair and upgrades.
    • Provide operations & maintenance and asset management program recommendations for electrical systems.
    • Act as subject matter expert for NERC Reliability standards applicable to Generator Owner.
    • Electrical equipment and duties within the scope of this position includes but is not limited to large utility generators, governors, excitation systems, generator circuit breakers, switchgear, switchboards, motor control centers, motors, control boxes, relay panels, lighting systems, power distribution systems and components, instrumentation (level, flow, pressure, temperature, vibration, etc.,), and diesel engine-generator sets.


    Qualifications

    Associate Power Systems Engineer, Senior
    • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or directly related field.
    • 2 years of engineering experience in a power utility ; or possession of Washington State EIT
    *Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

    Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
    Must complete Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) within 6 months of hire and maintain thereafter.
    Washington State Driver's License

    Power Systems Engineer, PE Minimum Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or directly related field
    • 4 years of professional level engineering experience in a power utility
    *Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

    Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
    May need to complete Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) within 6 months of hire and maintain thereafter depending on assignment.
    Washington State Licensed Professional Engineer within 6 months of hire and maintain thereafter.
    Washington State Driver's License
