    Position Summary

    Under general supervision, incumbent performs the full range of skilled journey-level plumbing work including: maintenance and repair to campus plumbing fixtures; maintenance of campus plumbing equipment and systems; clear, clean and maintain sewer lines and storm drains; review of campus construction and renovation project drawings to ensure compliance with campus standards and applicable codes; perform inspections on construction and remodel projects; lay out and install plumbing on new in-house construction and remodeling projects; etc.

    FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime compensation)

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,459 per month - $6,929 per month; commensurate with the candidate's education, experience, skills, certifications and training.

    CSU Classification Salary Range: $6,459 per month - $8,339 per month

    Department Information

    The plumbers replace and repair faucets, valves, water and drain lines, water heaters, sewer, storm, domestic and hot water circulating pumps, just to name some of the work they do. They also install new piping and plumbing components for remodel projects. On a regular basis, they hydro-jet sanitary and storm lines to keep them flowing utilizing an aggressive preventive maintenance program.

    The plumbers are also responsible for:
    • Maintenance and replacement of sanitary and storm systems
    • Domestic water mains
    • Natural gas distribution systems
    • Fire suppression systems such as sprinklers, stand-pipes, hose cabinets, and hydrants
    • Layout, rough-in and final fixture installation of all plumbing systems
    • Maintenance and repair of all 287 restrooms on campus
    • Testing and repairing 84 backflow prevention devices

    Minimum Qualifications

    Knowledge: Work requires thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the plumbing trade; a base knowledge of the operation of building automation systems; and a thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal health and safety orders and regulations pertaining to the plumbing trade, including the California State Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety and the California State Plumbing codes.

    Abilities: Must be able to perform skilled plumbing work on all applicable equipment and systems; perform applicable welding work; obtain necessary backflow prevention licenses; make rough sketches of plumbing installations; read and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; estimate materials and labor cost of standard plumbing maintenance and repair work; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; prepare standard reports; read and write at the level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position.

    Incumbents will be required to possess a California Driver’s License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate.

    Experience: These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard plumber’s apprenticeship program.

    Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to frequently move, transport, or position equipment up to 50 lbs.
    • Ability to wear appropriate protective equipment as needed

    License/Other:
    • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License.

    Preferred Qualifications

    10. Progressive responsible plumbing experience.

    11. Completion of a plumbing apprenticeship.

    12. Ability and willingness to perform asbestos, lead, and mold abatement if given the proper training.

    13. Experience working in a higher education environment.

    Required Licenses/Certifications

    Must posses and maintain a valid California Driver's License.
