    Summary

    This position is budgeted for $16.40 - $16.81/hour.

    This is a PARS (Public Agency Retirement System) budgeted position and is limited to 995 hours per fiscal year.

    This is not a PERS eligible position.
    SUMMARY:
    The Community Services Department seeks a dynamic and passionate individual to work with seniors. Under the direct supervision of the Program Coordinator, the Senior Service Aide II will support the Senior Transportation Program's operations by driving seniors to and from the community center, assisting passengers in and out of the vehicle, helping individuals to and from their homes as needed, and facilitating socialization activities with seniors. This 20-hour per week position is scheduled between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, with some nights and weekends required based on program needs.

    Key responsibilities:
    • Drives vehicle using specified routes to destination according to time schedules.
    • Assists passengers while embarking/disembarking the vehicle.
    • Provide additional assistance to/from the passenger’s home as requested.
    • Ensures the safety of passengers by utilizing safety restraints and proper seating.
    • Secures mobility devices, wheelchairs, bags, or other related items.
    • Handles passenger emergencies as they arise.
    • Performs daily safety inspection of vehicle before use.
    • Ensures the cleanliness of the vehicle and reports any maintenance concerns to the supervisor.
    • Prepares reports including supporting documentation as required.
    • Supports senior nutrition program as needed.
    • Reports any suspected elder abuse.
    • Maintains compliance with all California traffic laws
    • All other duties as assigned.

    The ideal candidate for this position will:
    • Be bilingual (English/Spanish)
    • Be energetic, self-motivated, and team-orientated in a fast-paced, often busy environment
    • Provide strong customer service skills in working with several groups and individuals
    • Have excellent oral skills to communicate with various individuals of diverse backgrounds
    • Have experience working with older adults
    • Have a clean driving record with no points on their license
    • Have experience as a commercial passenger driver
    • Have the ability to lift 50 lbs. for manual wheelchairs
    Minimum requirements:
    • 18 years of age at the time of employment
    • High school graduate or equivalent
    • Valid Class C Driver’s License
    • First Aid and CPR Certification within 30 days of employment

    SELECTION PROCEDURE

    Applications will be screened and the most qualified candidates will be invited to appear for testing. All positions require the ability to read, write and speak English. Types of tests may include written and/or oral examination, physical agility, practical exam or other appropriate job-related selection process. When testing is completed, candidates will be ranked on an eligibility list in the order of their test score. Selection for appointments is made from names certified on the eligibility list.

    All appointments are subject to the successful completion of background investigation including LIVESCAN fingerprinting, and will be required to submit verification of the legal right to work in the United States. Qualification by a medical examination will be required at the time of appointment. After appointment, classified employees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period to be eligible for regular status. In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, all new employees must produce proof of eligibility to work in the United States within the first three days of their employment. The City of Escondido participates in E-Verify®.

    The Loyalty Oath will be administered to all new employees on their first day of hire. New employees hired into positions that require a driver's license must provide proof of a valid California Driver's License of the appropriate class level on their first day of employment.

    VETERANS' PREFERENCE

    Eligible individuals are those who meet the following criteria:
    • Served in the U.S. armed forces

    Guard and Reserve active duty for training purposes does not qualify for veterans' preference. Proof of eligibility (copy of DD-214) must be submitted at time of application, or later if the promulgation of the eligibility list will not be delayed. Veterans' preference credit will only be applied to eligible applicants who attained a passing grade (total score exclusive of credit) on the final open examination.
