    Under general supervision, supervise a team of Registered Veterinary Technician and/or ancillary staff positions in the County of Los Angeles.

    Position Overview: As a Supervising Registered Veterinary Technician, you will play a crucial role in leading a team of Registered Veterinary Technicians and ancillary staff within the County of Los Angeles.

    Essential Job Functions

    Supervises and directs the work of assigned Registered Veterinary Technicians and ancillary staff working in animal care clinics.

    Assigns schedules, approves, and coordinates approved time-off, and performs other administrative supervisory duties functions, such as writing performance evaluations, for assigned staff.

    Trains assigned personnel on proper techniques for administering medications, the treatment of animals, general surgical procedures, and equipment use.

    Trains personnel on euthanasia procedures and new veterinary care techniques.

    Under direction of a veterinarian, provides medical care and treatment to animals by conducting physical examinations, administering medications and immunizations, and observing clinical symptoms.

    Monitors inventory levels of pharmaceutical supplies and equipment and assists in inventory maintenance for assigned unit.

    Maintains animal treatment records and monitors the feeding, care, and physical condition of animals.

    Performs euthanasia procedures of impounded animals.

    Attends meetings, as necessary.

    Participates in policy, procedure, and workflow discussions related to area of assignment. Provides feedback to management to facilitate establishment of protocols or practices.

    Requirements

    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

    Option 1
    Two (2) years of experience in the service of the County of Los Angeles as a Registered Veterinary Technician.

    Option 2
    Three (3) years of experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician in a clinical setting and/or animal care related program.

    Option 3
    One (1) year of experience as a full-time supervisor by providing administrative and technical* supervision to Registered Veterinary Technicians in an animal care setting.

    Option 4
    Two (2) years of experience leading** other Registered Veterinary Technicians or veterinary assistants in a clinical setting and/or animal care related program.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

    Experience working in an animal shelter as a Registered Veterinary Technician.

    PHYSICAL CLASS:

    3 - Moderate:
    Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    LICENSE:

    A valid Registered Veterinary Technician Certificate issued by the California State Board of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine and A valid California Class C Driver's License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

    * Administrative and technical supervision is defined as a position with the responsibility of the quantity and quality of work performed by lower level non-supervisory staff usually three (3) to ten (10) employees. Provides direct administrative and technical supervision to include planning, assigning, and reviewing work of staff, evaluating employee performance, approving leaves of absence, counseling, and recommending discipline. Position does not regularly engage in the same work as subordinates more than 40 percent of the time.
    ** Leading is defined as a position that acts as team or group leader to at least two (2) or more journey or lower level employees with responsibility for assigning, coordinating, and reviewing the work, ensuring proper work methods are followed, and providing technical assistance and training. Positions spend no more than 50 percent of time performing similar duties as the positions that they lead.

    The exam consists of a multiple choice and/or simulation test, weighted at 100%, assessing Management Potential, Working To High Quality Standards, Responsibility, Achievement, Willingness to Learn, Accepting Others, Showing Courtesy, Working Relationships, Analyzing Information, Learning Quickly, Compliance With Rules And Regulations, Adapting To Change, Controlling Emotions, Working Energetically, Reading Comprehension, and Deductive Reasoning.

    MULTIPLE CHOICE AND/OR SIMULATION ASSESSMENTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

    APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE REQUIREMENTS AND ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
    The names of candidates receiving a passing score on the examination will be placed on the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.
