The Position
Safety Specialists promote recognized safety practices among businesses covered by federal and State safety and health laws and regulations. Incumbents identify or train others to identify safety and health hazards and violations, and recommend reasonable and feasible means of abatement; research specific technology and industry applications using technical references and applicable codes and standards; prepare written reports and/or training materials; make public presentations to promote knowledge of safety issues among the public and industry groups; and maintain current knowledge of new technologies, standards, codes, rules and regulations.
Incumbents receive training in performing the duties described in the series concept. This is the trainee level in the series and progression to the next level in the series may occur upon meeting minimum qualifications, satisfactory performance, and with the recommendation of the appointing authority.
This position is with the Department of Business & Industry, Division of Industrial Relations, Mechanical Compliance Section (MCS) in Reno. This position is underfilling a Safety Specialist, Elevator position. This position will report to the Elevator Safety Supervisor: Elevator Safety Specialists will receive training in and perform the following: promote recognized safety practices among businesses throughout Nevada covered by State and federal safety and health laws, and regulations. Incumbents will perform safety inspections of elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, moving walks, personnel hoists, and related equipment to prepare written reports using technical references and applicable codes and standards; Position will Investigate accidents and complaints concerning elevators and related equipment which include interviewing complainants/witnesses, inspecting equipment, determining cause and appropriate method of correction; Position will provide technical assistance in response to inquiries from designers, constructors, architects, owners, users, service and repair organizations. Incumbents may be required to work shifts other than 7:00am to 4:00pm, to include nights/weekends and Holidays. Incumbents will be required to use State vehicle to conduct State business. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, occupational safety and health, law enforcement, fire science, construction management, or closely related field; OR Associate's degree from an accredited college, university, or trade school in engineering, occupational safety and health, law enforcement, fire science, construction management, or closely related field and one year of experience in the building trades, industrial operations and/or mechanical trades; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of experience as described above; OR one year of experience as an Architectural/Engineering Drafter II, Compliance Investigator I, Electrician I, Engineering Drafter III, Engineering Technician III or Maintenance Repair Specialist I in Nevada State service; OR two years of experience as a Maintenance Repair Worker III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes For the Safety Representative, Elevator - DIR, incumbents must obtain and maintain a State of Nevada Elevator Inspector's Certificate of Competency within twelve months of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. For the Safety Representative, Elevator - DIR, incumbents must obtain and maintain a Qualified Elevator Inspector's (QEI) Certificate within thirty-six months of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Special Requirements A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Positions may be required to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Positions may require statewide travel. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. Show moreThe presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.
European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.
Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
The Nevada Legislature has honored the State's natural resources and cultural heritage with a variety of State designations described below.
