    The Position

    Correctional Officers maintain and supervise offenders in State correctional facilities in a controlled humane environment. This position may be at a Maximum-Security Prison.

    Incumbents perform the full range of duties described in the series concept. This is the journey level class in this series.

    Correctional Officers maintain and supervise offenders in State correctional facilities in a controlled humane environment. Incumbents perform the full range of duties described in the series concept. This is the journey level class in this series. Correctional Officers control, direct, and monitor activity/movement of inmates; direct and instruct inmate work crews and evaluate inmate work; monitor and control inmates during transport to work assignments, classes, medical appointments, and court hearings using proper restraints and transport tactics; intervene and control acts of negative behavior and violence to maintain security and safety of inmates, staff and the public; and conduct regular and unscheduled head counts of inmates in order to give accurate physical counts according to established procedures.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Certification as a Category III Peace Officer from a Nevada P.O.S.T. approved law enforcement academy and one year of experience as a Correctional Officer in an adult and/or juvenile correctional institution; OR one year of experience as a Correctional Officer Trainee in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above, to include Certification as a Category III Peace Officer from a Nevada P.O.S.T. approved law enforcement academy. Special Notes Applicants must meet current Peace Officer Standards Training (POST-Category 3) requirements including the physical agility testing as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code. As part of the hiring process, applicants for positions in the Nevada System of Higher Education may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks. Current departmental staff will not be required to go through a background check, fingerprinting or the prescreening for controlled substances. Applicants must pass a strict annual physical examination in accordance with Nevada State Prisons Standards and to meet requirements of the provisions of the Heart/Lung Bills. An Associate's Degree in corrections, criminal justice, or a closely related field may be substituted for six months of the required journey level experience. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. Pursuant to NAC 289.110 all applicants must be a citizen of the United States. Pursuant to NAC 289.110 all applicants must be at least 21 years old. Pursuant to NAC 289.110 a person may not be appointed to perform the duties of a peace officer if he has been convicted of a felony in this State or of any offense, which would be a felony if committed in this state. Pursuant to NAC 289.110 a person may not be appointed to perform the duties of a peace officer if he has been convicted of an offense involving moral turpitude. Pursuant to NAC 289.110 a person may not be appointed to perform the duties of a peace officer if he has been convicted of an offense involving the unlawful use , sale or possession of a controlled substance. Pursuant to NAC 289.110 a person may not be appointed to perform the duties of a peace officer if there is a documented history of physical violence. A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. The Nevada Department of Corrections may not consider an applicant for employment if they have been discharged from military service other than honorably. The Nevada Department of Corrections may not consider an applicant for employment if they have been terminated for cause (due to a conduct-related situation) from a department of local, state, or federal government. The Nevada Department of Corrections may not consider an applicant for employment if they have been convicted of two (2) gross misdemeanors (other than traffic violations) during their lifetime. The Nevada Department of Corrections does not consider an applicant for employment if they have been convicted of a DUI/DWI within seven (7) years of their written application. The Nevada Department of Corrections does not consider an applicant for employment if they have been convicted of two (2) DUI/DWI within their lifetime. A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. As a condition of appointment and continuing employment, positions are subject to call-back, overtime on short notice, stand-by status, and must work various hours and/or shifts, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
