    Supervisor Katrina Foley, Fifth District Orange County Board of Supervisors

    Fifth District Communications Director

    Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley seeks a Communications Director with the ability to move forward the Supervisor’s priorities and initiatives with a passion for public service and changing the status quo.

    Under the supervision of the Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff, the Communications Director is responsible for managing the Supervisor’s daily press and digital operations, which includes media outreach as well as preparing press releases, talking points, briefing memos, social media content, and e-mail newsletters.

    The ideal candidate will have an enthusiasm for communications and social media trends with experience in professional writing, content creation, staffing, and working in a collaborative manner to deliver results for Orange County residents.

    The preferred candidate will have press and/or digital communications experience in the areas of homelessness, housing, public safety, the environment, local/state/federal governments, infrastructure, transportation and/or the courts are strongly preferred.

    Essential Job Functions
    • Prepare communications plans, press releases, talking points, op-eds, briefing memos, social media content, e-mail blasts, and weekly e-newsletters.
    • Serve as point of contact for media inquiries to provide background to reporters and coordinate media interviews with the Supervisor.
    • Manage Supervisor Foley’s social media platforms and posting schedule to ensure the publishing of timely content.
    • Create content for social media platforms based on Supervisor’s work that aligns with social media trends.
    • Coordinate with policy staff to prepare all briefing materials for the Board of Supervisors meetings and all appointed governing bodies.
    • Translate complex policy ideas into statements and talking points for the Supervisor and other team members.
    • Coordinate media and community events to secure media coverage and ensure event promotion among targeted stakeholders, constituents, and the public.
    • Work with local community leaders to connect County resources to constituents.
    • Brief the Supervisor on policy updates and changes, anticipate future changes, and work with the rest of the team to incorporate these into future action.
    • Attend local community events and press events with the Supervisor as assigned.

    • Engage with key stakeholders and community members to promote and educate underserved communities on County resources, programs and projects.


    Skills and Experience Required
    • Minimum of (2) years of experience with an elected official, business/industry association, law firm, labor union, or nonprofit.
    • Excellent research, oral, & written communications skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, work well under deadlines, and collaborate with team members.
    • Demonstrated ability to work well and produce quality products under pressure
    • Successfully manage competing priorities and fast changing deadlines
    • Experience engaging with stakeholders and constituents.
    • Intuitive understanding of the intersection between policy, communications, and community engagement.
    • Flexible thinker, with a proven ability to take direction and quickly build substantive expertise in new areas.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    Salary and Benefits
    Starting Salary $65,000 - $85,000. Negotiable and commensurate with experience. Benefits include Medical Insurance, Dental Insurance, Vision Insurance, Defined Benefit Pension Plan, Vacation/Sick Leave.

    Location

    The position is based in Santa Ana and is in-person , includes nights and weekends when necessary.
