The Position
Safety Specialists promote recognized safety practices among businesses covered by State and federal safety and health laws and regulations.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
This position works within the Department of Administration Risk Management Division and is in Carson City, NV. The incumbent is responsible for promoting the recognized safety practices among state agencies, which is covered by state and federal safety health and safety laws and regulations. The incumbent will be responsible for the management of safety reviews on all state buildings, monitoring outside vendors for loss prevention, loss control, and ergonomic evaluation services. Additional responsibilities include conducting and reviewing accident investigations of workers' compensation injuries, developing the annual safety report, coordinating quarterly safety meetings with all safety coordinators, planning, and coordinating the annual safety conference, developing training modules, and compiling statistical data on accident causation. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in occupational safety and health, safety engineering, or related field and two years of experience which included primary responsibility in four of the following areas in construction and/or general industry: hazard identification, hazard evaluation in relation to existing standards, hazard control design, hazard controls verification, safety/health program design, and safety/health program evaluation; OR Bachelor's degree in environmental, biological or physical sciences, public health, or engineering, and four years of experience as described above; OR certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), or Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM); OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and six years of experience as described above; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; OR one year of experience as a Safety Representative, Consultation or Enforcement in Nevada State service. Special Notes Travel to out-of-state locations for mandatory federal OSHA safety and health training is required for some positions. Special Requirements A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. Show moreThe presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.
European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.
Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
The Nevada Legislature has honored the State's natural resources and cultural heritage with a variety of State designations described below.
