    DEFINITION:
    Under general supervision, acts as a leadperson or performs the more skilled duties connected with the preparation and service of food in a County facility.

    CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
    Positions allocable to this class typically work under the direction of a higher level food service worker or cook supervisor and are responsible for assisting in the preparation and service of food in a County facility. Incumbents may function as either a leadperson over a group of food service workers and/or contract employees, or may be assigned to perform the more skilled food preparation and service duties. In a large, complex organization such as a Sheriff's Department custody facility, incumbents may be assigned to perform routine food service duties. Incumbents are required to have basic knowledge of food handling and preparation methods, health and safety regulations, and be skilled in the operation and use of kitchen equipment. Incumbents must possess the ability to understand and follow both verbal and written instructions. Duties of the position require the ability to stand or walk for long periods of time along with the ability to bend, stoop, squat, and reach. Positions assigned to either the Sheriff's or Probation Department are required to work in a custody/detention facility.

    Essential Job Functions

    Acts as a lead person over food service workers, e.g., inmate workers, in the preparation of food items, while operating standard kitchen equipment, e.g., oven, dishwasher, blender, mixing bowl, etc.; the standard kitchen equipment may be used to peel, slice, strain, or mix various food ingredients.

    Assigns duties to and checks work performance of subordinate food service workers, e.g., inmate workers, while in progress or upon completion.

    Performs light cooking duties, e.g., preparing puree meals, oatmeal, hot cakes, eggs, potatoes, burritos, or beef or chicken patties, and performs simple cooking in small quantities for service in the employees’ dining rooms.

    Observes food in the process of cooking and monitors cooking time, ensuring that foods are sufficiently cooked, and takes and records food temperatures.

    Loads serving carts and transports meals to dining halls, housing modules, or patient rooms.

    Prepares and serves specially prescribed medical diets and nourishments without immediate supervision, prepares food trays, ensures that patients/inmates receive prescribed diets, and may assist in feeding weak, injured, or aged patients/inmates.

    Prepares, weighs, labels, and apportions special diet food as prescribed by medical staff.

    Operates dishwashing machine and sets up a three-compartment sink to clean dishes, utensils, pots and pans, cleans kitchen work areas, sweeps and mops floors, cleans kitchen equipment, collects and disposes of garbage, and supervises food service workers, e.g., inmate workers, performing these tasks.

    Assists in the receiving of food deliveries via an outside delivery dock, stores food and non-food supplies in kitchen warehouses and walk-in freezers and refrigerators, and retrieves food supplies, ingredients, and condiments from kitchen storerooms.

    Bones, carves, and slices cooked roasts, poultry, and other meats, as required.

    Acts as a leadperson who supervises and/or instructs youth in a County-sponsored program, as required.

    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    OPTION A: Six months' experience in the preparation, serving, or cooking of food.

    OPTION B: Completion of a recognized course in quantity food preparation and cooking of at least six months duration.*

    LICENSE
    A valid Class C California Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL CLASS
    Physical Class III -- Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
    * Applicants expecting to qualify under OPTION B must include a legible copy of the certificate from an accredited school, such as Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, confirming successful completion of a recognized course in quantity food preparation and cooking at the time of filing, or within seven (7) calendar days from the date of filing your online application . Failure to provide the required documentation will result in application rejection .

    SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
    As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait twelve (12) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT
    This examination will consist of a computerized multiple-choice test covering mathematical computation and conversion, word problems, spelling, and reading comprehension weighted 100%.

    TRANSFER OF TEST COMPONENTS

    Applicants who have taken identical components recently for other exams may have their responses automatically transferred to this examination.

    This examination contains test components that may be used in the future for new examinations and your test responses may be transferred.

    THE MULTIPLE-CHOICE TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

    CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

    VETERAN'S CREDIT
    If you served in the military and were honorably discharged, you may qualify for Veteran's Credit. To receive this credit, please include a copy of you r DD214 Form issued by the branch of service with your application for review.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION

    The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of promulgation. Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION

    SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH.
    Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.

    ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED
    The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Department) has a "zero tolerance" policy for its employees for the following:
    • use of narcotics, controlled substances, and/or prescription drugs without a prescription.


    Any employee found in violation of this policy will be subject to discharge.
