    COMMUNITY SERVICES DIVISION
    The Health and Human Services Agency’s Community Services Division is responsible for the administration of older adult programs for El Dorado County residents 60 years of age and older. These services include: Senior Nutrition, Senior Shuttle, Older Adult Day Services, Long-Term Care Ombudsman, and many more! In addition to the services to seniors, Community Services also administers Veteran Affairs, Animal Services, Public Housing Authority, HEAP & Weatherization programs.

    THE OPPORTUNITY Put your culinary expertise to good use! The Cook I/II participates in the preparation, volume cooking, and portioning of meals for the seniors congregate meals, home delivery meal program, or for patients in a psychiatric facility; and performs related duties as assigned.

    The selected candidate will have the opportunity to:
    • Prepare, cook, and portion meals; prepare vegetables and fruits; cook meats, soups, and other foods; prepare salads, sauces, gravies, breads, puddings, and pastries; perform similar food preparation tasks.
    • Plan meals following established guidelines, and order and/or purchase required food items.
    • Prepare and oversee the preparation of a full range of meals, including special diets.
    • Direct the portioning of food for distribution to the home-meal population.
    • Ensure that food preparation equipment, cooking and serving utensils, kitchen work areas, and the dining area are orderly, clean, and sanitary.
    • Use, clean, adjust, and perform minor maintenance to a variety of large institutional cooking equipment.
    • Store leftover food appropriately; inventory and maintain stocks of food and supplies; receive food and supplies, unpack and store in the appropriate location.
    • Instruct staff in the techniques of food preparation, cooking, and portioning, including safe work procedures.

    Human Resources will assess your application to determine if you are minimally qualified using the following minimum qualifications. Any combination of the required experience, education, and training that would provide the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.

    Cook I:
    Equivalent to graduation from high school; AND one (1) year of assisting with food preparation and portioning.

    Cook II:
    Equivalent to graduation from high school; AND two (2) years of experience performing large scale food preparation and volume cooking experience at a level equivalent to the County's class of Cook I.

    Experience in an institution setting is desired.

    Licenses and Certifications:
    • Possession of a ServSafe Food Handler Certificate within three (3) months of hire.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The County of El Dorado is recruiting applicants for Cook I/II - Extra Help. This recruitment will establish a list for the purpose of filling current and future extra help vacancies for at least three (3) months.

    • There is currently (1) one extra help vacancy in the Health and Human Services Agency, located in South Lake Tahoe, CA. Extra help vacancies are made to maintain adequate coverage of work for short periods of time at frequent intervals, where employment is of a recurrent nature depending on the needs of the Agency; work may be seasonal, on-call, and/or for a limited duration. Extra help employees are not considered regular employees, therefore do not attain civil service status, and do not receive benefits or paid leaves; however, they do accrue sick leave consistent with the law. This extra help position may transition to a regular full-time employee if the conditions of Personnel Rules 1103.1 exist.
