    California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in the Department of Economics. Cal Poly Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 23-campus California State University system and among 12 such institutions nationwide. Since its founding in 1938, Cal Poly Pomona students participate in an integrative experiential learning education that is inclusive, relevant, and values diverse perspectives and experiences. With a variety of degree programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, engineering, and professional disciplines, the university is well known for its learn- by-doing approach and Teacher Scholar Model.

    The university is noted for its scenic and historic 1,400-acre campus, which was once the winter ranch of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg. We acknowledge that Cal Poly Pomona resides on the territorial and homelands of the Tongva and Tataavium people who are the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar. The university’s nearly 30,000 students are taught and mentored by the campus’s more than 1,400 faculty as part of 54 baccalaureate and 29 master’s degree programs, 11 credential and certificate programs, and a doctorate in educational leadership.

    Student Population. Cal Poly Pomona is the number one polytechnic university in the nation for student diversity and economic mobility. In Fall 2023, Cal Poly Pomona served more than 24,000 students and close to 2,000 graduate students, mostly residents of California. Over half of Cal Poly Pomona students are first-generation college students, 70% receive financial aid, and 42% are low-income students.     Department of Economics: The Department of Economics serves approximately 200 undergraduate students and 50 masters students. The successful candidate will be joining a department of 5 full-time faculty members and 10 adjunct faculty. The standard teaching load (lowered by one class per semester the first two years of service) is 4 classes per semester.

    The Economics Department at Cal Poly Pomona inclusively serves a diverse student body, many of whom are first-generation college students. We embrace an equitable perspective in pedagogy. We aim to deliver an inclusive polytechnic experience with measurable outcomes of academic excellence designed to provide transformational opportunities for social mobility. The department hosts a longstanding student exchange program with the University of Hanover, Germany, and has engaged in service-oriented teaching projects to help communities in Greater Los Angeles. We also utilize the teacher-scholar model, providing pathways to undergraduate research and encouraging faculty to bring research into the classroom.

    Position description: The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate classes in applied microeconomics, which may combine microeconomic theory with empirical tools commonly employed to test such theories or otherwise explore topics of interest to applied microeconomists. Possible areas of interest include labor economics, environmental and natural resource economics, public economics, financial economics, experimental and behavioral economics. The successful candidate will also be expected to produce high quality original research in an applied microeconomics field, related empirical, theoretical, or methodological contributions to the field are also recognized as legitimate scholarly pursuits. The candidate will also support the Economics department through service to the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences, the University, and the broader community served by Cal Poly Pomona.

    Minimum requirements include:
      • Ph.D. in Economics or related field with specialization in Applied Microeconomics. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position

      • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence.
      • Demonstrated potential for scholarly research and peer-reviewed publication.

    Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
      • Established record of effective teaching.
      • A well-defined research agenda.
      • Experience creating inclusive and equitable learning environments.
      • Experience supervising undergraduate and graduate research

    Finalists for the position will:

      • Final candidates being interviewed are expected to make a presentation of creative work and a teaching demonstration to faculty and interact with students.
