    The City of Newport Beach seeks a motivated individual to join the Community Development Department. Currently there is one flexibly staffed vacancy that may be filled at either the Civil Engineer - Plan Check or Civil Engineer, Senior - Plan Check level depending on the applicant's qualifications.

    SELECTION COMPONENTS:
    • Application Evaluation: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with the first review date of September 12 , 2024 . In order for the application package to be considered complete, candidates are required to attach their resume to their online application. This recruitment will remain open until the position is filled.
    • Interview: Candidates deemed most qualified as reflected in their online application will be invited to an interview tentatively scheduled for the week of October 8, 2024.

    SALARY:
    • Civil Engineer - Plan Check: $8,717 - $12,887 Monthly
    • Senior - Civil Engineer Plan Check: $9,603 - $14,185 Monthly
    CAREER PATH:
    This position is part of the Plan Check series which includes: Associate Civil Engineer, Civil Engineer, Senior Civil Engineer, and Principal.

    SCHEDULE:
    This position may work a 5/40 or 4/10 schedule.

    RETIREMENT:

    The City offers an excellent benefit package and membership in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). The retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS and the employee is required to contribute 11.5% of pay toward the retirement benefit.

    Experience & Education and License/Certificate

    A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Civil Engineer - Plan Check
    • Experience : Three years of experience checking building plans and/or multi-phased structural designs.
    • Education : Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering, structural engineering, or architecture.
    • License or Certificate : Due to the performance of some field duties, which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required.
      • Registration as a California Professional Engineer or Architect, depending on assignment.
      • Possession of or ability to obtain an ICC “Building Plans Examiner” certificate within six months of appointment.
    Civil Engineer, Senior - Plan Check
    • Experience : Four years of experience checking building plans and/or multi-phased structural designs.
    • Education : Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering, structural engineering, or architecture.
    • License or Certificate : Due to the performance of some field duties, which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required.
      • Depending on assignment:
        • Registration as a California Professional Engineer, Architect, Certified Engineering Geologist, or a Licensed Geotechnical Engineer, or equivalent.
        • Possession of or ability to obtain an ICC “Building Plans Examiner” certificate within six months of appointment.

    The City of Newport Beach is located in the coastal center of Orange County, with Los Angeles County to the north and San Diego County to the south. It has an estimated permanent population of 86,738 but during the summer months, the population grows to more than 100,000 with 20,000 to 100,000 tourists daily.

    The City of Newport Beach was incorporated September 1, 1906 and the current City Charter was adopted in 1954. The City operates under a Council-Manager form of government. Its seven City Council Members are elected by district, but are voted on by the population as a whole. They serve four-year terms. The Council consists of the Mayor and six other members and is responsible for policy-making, passing local ordinances, adopting the budget, appointing committees and hiring the City Manager, City Attorney, and City Clerk. The City Manager is responsible for carrying out the policies and ordinances of the City Council, for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the City, and for appointing heads of departments.
