    The Position

    Staff Associate Engineers perform professional engineering assignments not requiring licensure by the State Board of Professional Engineers & Land Surveyors.

    Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

    This recruitment may be used to fill multiple positions within the Nevada Department of Transportation's Rotational Engineer Program. Rotational Engineers work in various divisions throughout the department and gain experience in different civil engineering disciplines while gaining a perspective of department operations. The knowledge gained will provide the individual with the necessary skills and experience to seek career opportunities within the department and prepare for future leadership roles, including supervisory and managerial. Incumbents will progress through two phases of the program over 24 months. Phase one takes incumbents through a 19-month core training rotation through 14 major divisions within the agency: Structural Design, Roadway Design, Materials, Hydraulics, Maintenance and Asset Management, Traffic Operations, Traffic Safety, Construction, Project Management, Environmental Services, Stormwater, Right-of-Way, Planning, and Location. Phase two allows incumbents to gain more in-depth exposure to a specific division or district based on the incumbent's career interests. Civil engineering fieldwork experience gained in a college-level internship, Engineer-in-Training (EIT) program, or college research position is required. Having and maintaining a valid Driver's license is required. The position location is at the Nevada Department of Transportation's headquarters in CARSON CITY, with travel up to 50% of the time on the job, statewide, outside of Carson City on a limited basis is required. Working a variable schedule outside the typical Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM schedule with possible nights and/or weekends is required.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Certification by the Nevada State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors as an Engineer Intern; OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or a closely related engineering field; OR two years of journey level technical experience equivalent to an Engineering Technician III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required at the time of appointment and for continuing employment. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
