    Salary Information:
    Grade I - $1,837.52 - $2,492.32 Bi-Weekly
    Grade II - $2,121.52 - $2,900.96 Bi-Weekly
    Grade III - $2,214.88 - $2,998.56 Bi-Weekly
    Grade IV - $2,567.92 - $3,491.60 Bi-Weekly

    VACANCY INFORMATION:
    • There are multiple vacancies in Grade III ($2,214.88 - $2,998.56 Bi-Weekly) assigned to the Police Department Jail.
    • This classification is also used in Public Works, Environmental Services/Street Sweeping Bureau, and Airport Operations Security.
    • This classification is also used in the Airport Communications Center. These positions are unarmed and work in dispatch.


    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    Under general supervision, patrols or guards assigned areas. on specified shifts; protects property; regulates vehicular, pedestrian, or marine traffic; enforces rules, regulations, and laws; issues warnings, citations, or Notices of Violations; investigates and may apprehend and detain persons suspected of illegal activity; may guard, direct and/or supervise the activities of persons held in police detention facilities or in transport, related duties as required.

    REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

    Applicants must meet ALL of the following:
    • 18 years of age or older at the time of filing.
    • A valid driver's license at the time of filing.

    Applicants will waive the written exam and will be placed on the eligible list if they have achieved placement on the City of Long Beach Police Recruit Eligible List after November 2021 (proof required)*.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Ability to maintain the physical security of premises in a public environment; patrol or guard public buildings and property;
    • Ability to enforce specified rules, regulations, and laws;
    • Ability to guard and supervise persons in detention facilities;
    • Ability to monitor pedestrian, vehicular or marine traffic;
    • Ability to read and interpret a variety of written documents (regulations, policies, and procedures);
    • Ability to write clear, accurate and legible reports;
    • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public;
    • Ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations;
    • Ability to speak clearly and effectively;
    • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
    • Ability to possess observation, writing, and communication skills.
    • Ability to demonstrate human relations skills; be compassionate, culturally sensitive, and nondiscriminatory to a diverse population; possess leadership and public service qualities. Ability to exercise tact using interpersonal skills; solve problems and demonstrate mediation skills during highly confrontational situations.
    • Ability to pass a thorough background investigation which includes a polygraph, psychological, and medical examination. The investigation will cover information regarding relatives, references, acquaintances, educational background, residential history, employment history, DMV record, criminal history, military service records, financial status, legal history, drug use, and related areas.
    Willingness to work nights, shifts, mandatory overtime, holidays, and/or weekends as scheduled, and to attend training programs.

    Positions in the Police Department must have the willingness and ability to participate and complete in a city-paid In-Custody Training prior to the completion of probation (if not already obtained).

    Some positions require the use of firearms and to carry them during duty hours.

    SSO III and SSO IV positions in Airport Operations will have the opportunity to attend P.O.S.T. module academy Level III, II, and I.

    Applicants must be able to pass a thorough background investigation prior to appointment. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license and a current DMV driving record must be submitted to the hiring department at the time of the selection interview.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

    Prior experience working in a detention center. Completion of the Board of State Community Corrections (BSCC) In-Custody Training. Completion of accredited coursework in laws of arrest and use of firearms, water safety, or lifesaving; certificates in CPR/First Aid; PC832 (Proof Required)* and/or; effective use of personal computers and related software applications; bilingual skills in English/Spanish or English/Southeast Asian languages.

    *Proof of required documents, such as degree or transcripts, must be uploaded to the online application at the time of filing. Any proof submitted must contain either the applicant's name or other identifying characteristics on the form. Degrees must indicate the field of study and transcripts must indicate a field of study and degree conferred date. Candidates who possess degrees from colleges or universities outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalence at the time of filing.

    SELECTION PROCEDURE

    (Candidates placed on a Police Recruit eligible list since November 2021, may waive the written examination.)

    A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in order to pass the examination. Certification by score bands will be considered based on analysis of exam results. The resulting eligible list will remain in effect for at least one year. Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. Only those candidates showing the strongest backgrounds on the basis of comparative analysis willbe invited to the examination process. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.

    In accordance with Civil Service Procedure 3.38, all eligible veterans that successfully qualify on any or all opencompetitive examinations shall receive an additional credit of ten (10) points that will be added to their original passing score. Disabled veterans passing the examination shall receive a credit of fifteen (15) points that will be added to their original passing score. (A copy of the veterans DD-214, Member 4 form indicating honorable discharge must be attached to the application at the time of filing.)
