GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This position is located in a very remote and rugged portion of the Chihuahuan Desert with extreme heat in the summer. Amenities are limited and cell signal is not always reliable. It is highly recommended that applicants review, research, and visit the area before applying. The Big Bend region is also a gorgeous part of Texas with some of the best outdoor recreational opportunities and most interesting interpretive opportunities in the entire state featuring very mild to warm winters and the highest biodiversity in Texas.

Under the direction of the Barton Warnock Visitor Center (BWVC) Park Superintendent, this position performs routine (journey-level) state park operations work and is responsible for developing and implementing interpretive programs for the Park. Manages the front desk and all aspects of visitor services including camping and day use registration, gift shop sales, and license sales and recruits for the volunteer program. Develops and implements interpretive programs with emphasis on Cultural and Natural Resource protection and preservation and educational programs for all ages. Responsible for supplying and disseminating information on Texas Parks & Wildlife, Big Bend Ranch State Park, and interpretive programs to the general public. Communicates with all units of the Big Bend Ranch Complex, Region 1, and Austin Headquarters about public events at Barton Warnock Visitor Center. Conducts and supervises programs to include evening and weekend presentations, tours of the Interpretive Center and Desert Gardens, and other programs as needed and assigned by the Park Superintendent. Responsible for the curation and upkeep of the collections, exhibits and gardens at the Barton Warnock Visitor Center. Assists in the maintenance of equipment, buildings and grounds as needed. Trains and supervises docents and volunteers. Trains new employees as needed. Responsible for submitting daily, weekly, and monthly reports as necessary. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the uses of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.


Qualifications:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree.

Experience:

No experience required.

Licensure:

Applicant must possess a valid State driver's license;

Must possess or be able to obtain, within one year of employment a Texas Department of Agriculture Noncommercial Political Pesticide Applicator license.

NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:

Education:

One year of experience in interpretation or conducting educational programs may substitute for 30 hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 120 semester hours.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in one of the following areas: Park Administration, Recreation & Parks, Wildlife/Fisheries Science, Natural and/or Cultural Resource Conservation, Range Management, Forestry, Biology, Anthropology/Archeology, History or closely related field.

Experience:

Experience in park interpretation and education;

Experience in natural and/or cultural resource management;

Experience in human resource management;

Experience in customer service/public relations;

Experience with marketing and promotions;

Experience in facility, grounds, equipment and vehicle maintenance/repairs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of all phases of park administration and operation;

Knowledge of the fundamentals of natural and cultural resource management;

Knowledge and methods of financial and business management principles;

Knowledge of the rules and regulations on hunting and fishing;

Knowledge of applicable TPWD agency regulations, federal, state, and local laws as they apply to resource management;

Knowledge of the geology, flora & fauna of the Big Bend to include bat species, birds, mammals and other wildlife of the Big Bend;

Knowledge of desert survival techniques;

Knowledge of the History of the Big Bend and the archeology as well as the pre-history of the Big Bend;

Knowledge of back packing skills and back country camping;

Knowledge of white water rafting and canoeing;

Knowledge of mountain biking;

Knowledge of equestrian trails;

Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

Skill in facilitating meetings;

Skill in making public presentations;

Skill in general maintenance techniques;

Skill in wilderness advanced first aid, CPR, emergency procedures search and rescue;

Skill in providing interpretive presentations, demonstrations, and interpretive writing;

Skill in teaching techniques, training new employees, volunteers, and interns;

Skill in Biological research techniques;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Required to work in a public park with overnight camping and day use;

Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays;

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety standards;

Required to respond to emergency situations;

Required to live on-site in State housing with a monthly deduction of $152.94. Housing rate is established by TPWD policy, calculated using federal guidelines, and may change according to market value;

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Required to operate a State vehicle;

Required to travel 20% with overnight stays;

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
