Having highly talented employees provides the best service to our community. This is a part-time position and incumbents will work an average of 19 hours per week. Work hours and schedules vary according to program and participant needs. Successful candidates must be available to work shifts during various hours of the day, evenings, holidays, and weekends.

Essential Functions Include But Are Not Limited To Under general supervision
- Supervises program participants in recreation activities at recreation centers, and/or parks
- Assists in planning, organizing, promoting and conducting educational and recreational activities including; arts, sports, games, excursions, competitive activities, contests, summer camps, and special events
- Compile program/activity descriptions; maintain inventory of supplies and materials
- Collect and submit participant rosters, attendance sheets, registration forms, monthly statistical reports and other program data
- Assists with supervision of staff and volunteers
- Assists with development and implementation of program rules
- Monitor and evaluate daily activities and make recommendations for improvement
- Provide general center support
- Participate cooperatively in work team activities
- Answer telephone and provide customer assistance over the telephone or in-person
- May make presentations to city agencies, neighborhood associations and community groups
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
If assigned to Zoo, duties may include: - May work in animal interaction areas ( goat yard, butterfly aviary, bird aviary)
- Addresses emergency/accident issues related to patrons and facilities
- Works outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
- May handle live animals for education programs
Minimum QualificationsEducation and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of experience working in a recreation program, or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the desirable knowledge, skills and abilities. Possession and retention of a valid California Class C Driver's license is required.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of : Arts & Craft projects, outdoor activities, such as: excursions, event planning, outdoor recreation (rules and regulations as it pertains to basketball, baseball, football and other sports), gardening; chess rules and regulations; basic English usage, writing, math and record keeping; previous experience working with adults in recreation or community activities is highly desirable; basic use of computers, the internet, and Microsoft Word; and Recreation Registration software.
Ability to : work in a team environment or with minimal supervision, work outside in all weather conditions, understand and communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing; operate current office software and educational software applications, work with groups of all ages; handle a variety of emergency situations.
Special Working Conditions: Must be willing and able to work irregular hours, including weekends and evenings.

Part-Time employees accrue paid sick leave at the rate of one (1) hour of paid sick leave for every thirty (30) hours worked up to a maximum accrual of 6 days or 48 hours. Employees are eligible to use 3 days or 24 hours of accrued paid sick leave in a 12-month period.
