    POSITION PURPOSE

    The Pilates Instructor position is responsible for teaching group and private Pilates classes to participants of various ages and ability levels. This position motivates participants and engages them in safe and effective exercise techniques. The Pilates Instructor is responsible for providing a comfortable and welcoming environment and being flexible to accommodate the individual needs of participants. Recreation staff have the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of program participants. Hours for this position vary and may include early mornings, days, evenings, weekends and holidays.

    The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate. We are posting this position to support the re-opening of our recreation facilities and programs to the public.

    GENERAL COMPETENCIES

    Job Specific - Every employee in this position must be able to:
    • Demonstrate knowledge of Pilates principles
    • Instruct Pilates classes safely and effectively
    • Direct students on how to strengthen core muscles by developing pelvic stability and abdominal control
    • Demonstrate proper warm up and cool down techniques according to the Pilates principle
    • Demonstrate safe and proper use of Pilates equipment
    • Lead a class composed of individuals with various skill levels
    • Communicate clearly with participants so that they can easily follow instructions before and during activity
    • Provide an encouraging and motivating environment in which participants can attain their personal fitness goals
    • Interact with guests and coworkers in a professional, friendly and courteous manner
    • Keep Pilates studio clean and organized according to standards

    All employees are expected to provide excellent customer service, communicate in an effective manner both verbally and in writing, display professionalism and integrity, work efficiently, effectively and accurately, work independently and as part of a team, take initiative, solve problems, display good judgment, take ownership for delivering a high quality product or service, have regular and punctual attendance, and effectively handle emergency situations.

    JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

    Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks

    1. Prepares studio for Pilates classes
    • Sets up and breaks down equipment
    • Calls private clients 24 hours in advance to confirm appointment

    2. Instructs class participants on proper flexibility and strength exercises according to the Pilates principle
    • Provides safe and effective workouts for different populations in accordance with class descriptions
    • Demonstrates and instruct safe and proper use of equipment
    • Provides clear and concise instruction before and during activity
    • Encourages participants to remain motivated to attain their personal fitness goals

    3. Provides welcoming environment to participants
    • Maintains cleanliness of Pilates studio
    • Acknowledges each class participant when they enter and leave the class
    • Shows enthusiasm and friendliness to participants
    • Uses professional conduct when interacting with participants and coworkers
    • Demonstrates flexibility by accommodating the needs of individual participants

    4. Maintains regular and punctual attendance

    Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

    Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications

    Required :
    • Must be at least 21 years of age
    • High school diploma or GED
    • Nationally recognized Pilates certification with a minimum of 500 hours
    • First Aid, CPR and AED certification by date of hire
    • Minimum of two (2) years of experience teaching Pilates group classes including mat, chair, and reformer classes

    Preferred :

    Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.

    Physical Requirements

    This is a physically demanding position that requires a high degree of stamina and strength, including the ability to:
    • Frequently sit, stand and walk through a multi-level facility
    • Occasionally squat, bend, kneel, twist, climb, balance and reach over head
    • Occasionally lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds
    • Frequently use hands and fingers for fine manipulation; occasionally use light and firm grasp
    • Frequently see objects up close to perform office tasks and far away to observe activity for safety hazards or problems
    • Constantly use hearing to interact with guests and staff and recognize trouble outside of view
    • Occasionally use sufficient physical strength, stamina and agility to perform emergency work in various capacities
    • Maintain an elevated heart rate and high degree of movement and activity for extended periods of time

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Work is constantly performed indoors with occasional outdoor activity. Indoor and outdoor work is performed in a high public use, multilevel recreation facility where loud noise and multiple events and activities at one time may cause a distraction. Exposure to periods of high activity and stress under demanding conditions. The position requires a great deal of communication with City employees, the public, and outside agencies.

    Required Materials and Equipment

    Wireless microphone, stereo, Reformers, Magic Circles and other Pilates-related equipment.

    PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

    Candidates must be legally entitled to work in the United States and must successfully pass a criminal background check, reference check, and substance screen. There may be additional pre-employment requirements depending on the nature of the position.
