    Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings to supportive housing.

    DEFINITION:
    Functions as a project architect and is responsible for coordinating, preparing and reviewing the study and development of program requirements, schematic, preliminary, and complete working drawings for complex projects.

    Essential Job Functions

    Prepares or coordinates the preparation of complex architectural design work utilizing the Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) System, including developing program requirements, plan layouts, schematic, preliminary plans, complete working drawings, specifications and cost estimates.

    Prepares and participates in the preparation of feasibility studies and reports.

    Conducts field investigations to obtain data, measurements and information needed to draft or design detail for alteration or new construction projects.

    Provides information or gives instructions regarding unique features of particular projects, code requirements or County architectural standards.

    Reviews the progress of all assigned projects to ensure that the architect, engineer, telecommunications, and landscape architecture sections are working on schedule and within budgetary and fee limitations; expedites the completion of work when delays occur.

    Prepares reports, project status schedules and architectural design cost estimates for budget purposes; coordinates the status of schedules and estimates with departmental representatives, leasing and other project managers, and fiscal groups.

    Reviews plans and specifications prepared by private architects to determine compliance with program requirements and County architectural standards.

    Inspects construction operations and materials to maintain design control.

    Reviews shop drawings submitted by contractors to determine if program requirements and architectural standards have been met.

    Provides project and construction management services in connection with build-out of leased facilities of use by County departments as needed.

    Leads or directs architectural activities involving the design and plan preparation of complex construction projects as needed.

    Attends conferences and meetings involving division heads, other County officials, contract architects or contractors to resolve problems.

    Requirements

    SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

    A California license to practice architecture, issued by the California Architects Board* -AND- One (1) year of architectural experience. Architectural experience must have been gained as a licensed architect in the state of California.

    Required license(s) and/or certification(s) must be active and unrestricted, or your application will NOT be accepted.

    LICENSE:
    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATION:
    • Experience in the design of healthcare facilities.
    • Credit will be given for additional experience in excess of the Selection Requirements.
    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
    *In order to meet the Selection Requirements applicants are required to attach a valid legible photocopy of their California license to practice architecture, issued by the California Architects Board with your application at the time of filing, or email to exam analyst at ainiguez2@dhs.lacounty.gov within seven (7) calendar days from the date of filing your application online. Please include the exam number and the exam title on the email. Applications without the required license will be considered incomplete and will be rejected.

    IMPORTANT NOTICE: Prime Variance Reports (PVRs), also known as Master Time Records, are not accepted, or required as part of the application process; this includes the selection interview and the background-check.

    Additional Information

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:

    This examination will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based on application information and desirable qualifications weighted 100%.

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on this examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

    Los Angeles County will not consider claims of not viewing or receiving notification to be a valid reason for late test administration or rescheduling of a test component.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:

    Applications will be processed on an "as received" basis, and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligibility register accordingly.

    The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

    No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

    VACANCY INFORMATION:
    The resulting eligible register from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services, as they occur.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION:
    Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
