    COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES PROBATION DEPARTMENT

    DEFINITION:
    Coordinates the procurement, inspection, assignment, maintenance, repair and disposal of a fleet of automotive and heavy construction equipment for a County Department.

    Essential Job Functions

    • Supervises or participates in the arrangements for maintenance and repair of equipment, and for replacement units while equipment is undergoing repair.
    • Confers with department personnel regarding their equipment needs and makes arrangements for securing such equipment by transfer of equipment from other operating units, rental of equipment, or makes recommendations for the purchase of additional equipment.
    • Supervises and may participate in the inspection of new equipment or equipment in the process of being manufactured or modified for compliance with specifications, accepting or rejecting the equipment or recommending changes.
    • Prepares specifications for equipment to be purchased or modified.
    • Makes recommendations regarding standardization of procurement procedures and improvement in operating and maintenance procedures on the basis of equipment inspection, surveys and records.
    • Assigns equipment to the various sections of the department and coordinates the transfer of equipment between sections.
    • Participates in the preparation of the department's automotive and heavy construction equipment budget.
    • Recommends disposal of equipment through trade-in or salvage, based on records and inspection of equipment.
    • Supervises the use of equipment on assigned projects.
    • Investigates automotive accidents involving department personnel.
    • Performs road tests to ensure that complaints in regards to vehicle performance of the vehicles are in compliance to specification, as needed.


    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Option I: Three years' *technical experience in the procurement or inspection of automotive and **heavy construction equipment.

    Option II: Three years in the ***supervision of the maintenance and repair or operation of automotive and heavy construction equipment.

    Option III: One year's experience as an Assistant Automotive Equipment Coordinator.****

    NO OUT-OF-CLASS EXPERIENCE WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR THIS EXAM.

    LICENSE:
    A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

    Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant’s driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

    PHYSICAL CLASS:
    III - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS INFORMATION:

    *Technical experience in the procurement or inspection of automotive and heavy construction equipment setting is defined as having experience conducting vehicle/and or equipment inspection, coordinating maintenance, repair, disposal of equipment, manage acquisition, transfer , cost, and preparing specifications.

    **Heavy construction equipment is defined as heavy-duty vehicles (e, g, excavators, bulldozers, motor grader, dump trucks, bucket trucks, compactors, etc.) designed for construction and maintenance tasks.

    *** Supervision of the maintenance is defined as experienced staff providing direct supervision, or through subordinate staff, of the monitoring, reviewing, and inspection of vehicle/equipment repairs, general maintenance, installation of after-market equipment to ensure quality of work and cost effectiveness.

    **** In order to qualify for Option III, applicants must have held the payroll title of Assistant Automotive Equipment Coordinator for one year.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
    Additional points will be given to qualified applicants beyond meeting the requirements and who possess the following desirable qualifications:

    • Experience in establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with internal and external agencies and partners (e.g., vendors, repairs shop, equipment supplier, etc.) by communicating, coordinating, and scheduling equipment or vehicle maintenance, storage, and resource needs.
    • Experience in utilizing software application systems such as, Microsoft Suite, Outlook, Excel, etc., to generate reports using specific commands (e.g., Excel- menu commands; setting up simple arithmetic formulas, etc.) and to maintain records of vehicle or equipment.
    • Experience in utilizing online systems for maintaining, and tracking service requests, such as maintenance, repairs, inspection to ensure vehicle and/or equipment services are completed timely.


    Additional Information

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:
    This examination will consist of an Evaluation of Experience based upon the application information, desirable qualifications and supplemental questionnaire weighted 100%.

    Candidates who do not achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the Evaluation of Experience will be notified by email. SCORES CANNOT BE GIVEN OVER THE PHONE.

    Candidates must meet the Minimum Requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:

    The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

    No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION:

    FINGERPRINTING AND SECURITY CLEARANCE
    A thorough background investigation will be conducted prior to appointment. Any false statement or omission of material fact may cause forfeiture of employment rights. Information presented on the employment application, resume, and during the examination process is subject to verification.

    Candidates who are found unsuitable for employment will be removed from the eligible list pursuant to Civil Service Rule 6.04.
