    The Position

    Public Safety Dispatchers perform technical communications work in the operation of a district, central, or statewide communications center including but not limited to: providing assistance to law enforcement units in both routine and emergency situations; dispatching enforcement units and other emergency mobile units from a computerized dispatch center; researching various criminal justice records systems and transmitting the required information; placing telephone calls for officials and registered vehicle owners at accident scenes; providing assistance to other law enforcement agencies as requested; maintaining a variety of logs and records; and preparing statistical summaries on center activities.

    Incumbents perform the full range of duties described in the series concept and, in addition, act as a lead worker over lower-level Public Safety Dispatchers to include work review and assignment, training, and providing input regarding performance evaluations and discipline as needed. This is the journey level in the series.

    Provides law enforcement and public safety dispatch services to field game wardens and in contract with federal law enforcement agencies on the NDOW frequency throughout the State from the central dispatch center in Reno. Dispatch Center Hours are from 6am to 11pm with each shift being 10 hours. Dispatch Center is not a 911 PSAP Center and has Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays off. Dispatchers also provide general dispatch services for all non-law enforcement NDOW employees in the field and for NDOW's helicopter flights. There are two positions being recruited and at all three levels, Public Safety Dispatcher 1, 2, and 3.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Two years of experience in law enforcement communications including control of ten or more units and the use of State and national criminal justice information systems; OR one year of experience as a Public Safety Dispatcher II in Nevada State service. Special Requirements Positions require a pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting. Positions require work on evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.     The presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.

    Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
