    The Position

    Highway Maintenance Workers are certified by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to operate a variety of complex or specialized highway maintenance and construction equipment in order to restore and maintain the integrity of roadway surfaces; maintain roadside slopes, shoulders, culverts and ditches to restore drainage and prevent erosion; and repair or replace related roadway appurtenances such as guardrails, markers, guide posts and fences.

    Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.

    This position is in Austin, NV. This position is a safety sensitive position that is required to maintain roads and associate appurtenances on all state roadway systems within the crew's boundary. During regular maintenance and flagging operations, it is essential to have crews fully staffed to run all associated equipment within the operation. This is a lead worker position who acts as a certified designated equipment operator who trains lower-level staff. Serves as a lead worker and as an assistant to the Highway Maintenance Supervisor I. Reviews the work of other personnel and provides input into performance evaluations and is the acting Supervisor I, as needed. Housing or RV Park is available for selected candidate.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Graduation from high school or equivalent education and one year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Notes In order to meet the needs of specialized disciplines within the highway maintenance field, certified equipment proficiency or specialized skills may be required for Highway Maintenance Worker III's and IV's and will be identified at the time of recruitment. Special Requirements This position may require working alternate shifts and outside of traditional business hours. The hours of this position are subject to change based on the needs of the appointing authority. Typical shifts are four 10-hour or five 8-hour shifts, but may include some variation depending on the specific needs of the department. This position requires an applicant be at least 18 years of age upon application. If selected, proof of being at least 18 years of age will be required. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. In addition, federal law requires random testing for controlled substances during employment. A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Additional Position Criteria A valid Class A or B commercial driver's license is required within six months of employment. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation.
