    CAREER DESCRIPTION

    CUSTODIAN

    SALARY INFORMATION

    This position is scheduled to receive salary range increases on the following date:

    Effective June 27, 2025 - 3.75% increase

    Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

    Premium Pay

    In addition to the hourly salary, eligible applicants may receive premium pay for the item listed below:
    • Night Shift Differential pay: Employees assigned to a night shift shall be paid a night shift differential for each hour actually worked on the assigned night shift. Pay rate is determined by assigned shift hours found here (page 11).


    OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

    This recruitment is open to the public and will establish an open eligible list. This list will be used to fill current and future Custodian vacancies. This eligible list may be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications throughout the County of Orange.

    OC Public Works provides services on a regional basis to unincorporated areas, cities, and other County agencies and departments. The primary mission of the department is to protect and enrich the community through the sustainable delivery of projects and services.     OC Facilities Maintenance ensures the efficient and innovative operation of County facilities through maintenance management services, after-hours emergency support, building automation, and utility management.

    THE OPPORTUNITY
    OC Facilities Maintenance is seeking Custodians to perform maintenance inside and outside County facilities using cleaning equipment and chemicals. Custodial Services are critical for the maintenance, and health and safety at County facilities. This position may also be assigned to disinfect COVID-19 infected spaces with appropriate cleaning and sanitation methods.

    This position will be assigned to work Monday through Friday, 5:00 PM to 1:30 AM. Based on operational needs, overtime may be available. On occasion, this position may be required to fill in for the day porter.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES
    The ideal candidate must be able to perform moderate to strenuous physical work, and must possess demonstrated knowledge and work experience in the following core competencies:

    Custodial Knowledge
    • Cleaning and sanitation methods used in custodial work
    • Methods of cleaning floors, lavatories, windows, walls, doors, wood, and furniture
    • Utilizing common cleaning materials such as soap, detergent, solvents, and waxes
    • Safety practices as applied to custodial work
    • Utilizing custodial equipment and the care and maintenance requirements
    • Operating heavy floor power cleaning equipment (vacuum cleaner and attachments, scrubbers, and buffers) to clean floors
    • Ability to recognize problem areas in cleaning and sanitizing in order to use the proper cleaning agent to remove different kinds of stains on a variety of surfaces
    • Moving furniture, cabinets, and other equipment
    • Washing windows, walls, and lavatories; emptying trash and dusting furniture
    • Counting, adding, and subtracting small numbers

    Communication
    • Effectively communicating with supervision, co-workers and the public
    • Following written and oral instructions and schedules
    • Working cooperatively with others
    • Preparing written records of areas cleaned, requests for supplies or repairs as needed
    • Speaking English sufficiently to communicate basic ideas to supervisor and fellow employees

    Time Management
    • Following a work schedule and prioritizing tasks
    • Stocking supplies and equipment needed for the job
    • Ordering supplies in a timely manner through supervisor
    • Working effectively and cooperatively with co-workers who are working on a task

    LICENSE REQUIRMENTS
    Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher, is required by date of appointment.

    Physical and Mental Requirements
    Requires performing heavy, fatiguing work; climbing, pushing, pulling, stooping and lifting five-gallon containers of materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

    RECRUITMENT PROCESS
    Human Resource Services (HRS) screens all application materials for minimum and/or desirable qualifications. After screening, applicants who meet the minimum and/or desirable qualifications will be referred to the next step in the recruitment process. All applicants will be notified via email of their status in the process.

    Online Assessment (Weighted 100%)
    Applicants whose experience and education appear to best meet the needs of the department will be invited to participate in an online multiple-choice examination. Only the applicants who receive the highest score on the assessment will be referred to the eligible list.

    Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedure listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure. Completion of a background investigation to the satisfaction of the County may be required for some assignments.

    Eligible List
    Once the assessments have been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
