    Job Description:

    Overview

    Performs specialized work conducting and directing recreational programs and activities at a designated park, playground or other recreational facility. Promotes good relationships with neighborhood and activity groups. May lead one or more personnel when engaged in activities requiring additional recreation staff.

    Essential Functions
    • Responsible for professional recreation work in directing specified activities at recreation facilities or major playgrounds.
    • Assists in providing a healthy and safe environment for the general public visiting the facility.
    • Recognizes, corrects and reports safety issues to supervisor.
    • Ability to perform tasks which require physical ability in a safe/efficient manner in a variety of weather conditions.
    • Participates directly in the planning and execution of programs and special events.
    • Leads year-round programming at the recreation facility which may include being assigned a specific population.
    • Coordinates a variety of programs which may include after school, school break and summer programs.
    • Works extensively with assigned population providing mentoring and guidance.
    • Ability to work a varied schedule based upon the needs of the facility.

Incumbent may be required to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this job description.


    Minimum Qualifications
    • High School Diploma or GED.
    • One (1) year of recreation experience.
    • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License is required.


    Job Based Competencies
    • Ability to instruct individuals and groups, to carry out in-service training as well as suggest and initiate new innovative activities and programs.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
    • Ability to maintain clear and comprehensive records and reports as specified by the department.
    • Ability to schedule and maintain a staff at the assigned facility.
    • Ability to maintain cash receipt reports and point of sale function at the assigned facility.
    • Computer literate including Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Skilled at managing groups of program participants with a variety of backgrounds and personalities.
    • Ability to relate to assigned population while maintaining professional boundaries and setting an outstanding example of personal excellence.


    Responsibility

    Under the direction of and responsible to the Department Head or designated representative. Supervision may be exercised over designated programs and facility volunteers.

    Physical Requirements

    This position requires the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Work requires considerable physical activity including walking, lifting, reaching, stooping, pulling, grasping, balancing, climbing, kneeling, standing and crouching. Incumbent is subject to inside and outside activities with a variety of weather changes or atmospheric conditions. Incumbent may be exposed to activities such as noise and jobs with potential hazards that may require special protection and/or special safety precautions. Visual acuity is required to inspect work completed by crews for accuracy and quality. Incumbent is required to hear sufficiently to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Manual dexterity is required to operate equipment in performance of duties.

    Public Contact

    Considerable public contact that generates community support and interest. Works extensively with the public including facility patrons, program participants and even attendees.
