    Salary and Benefits

    The starting salary will likely be around $5,705 per month (at 0.8 time base).

    About the Position

    Working under the supervision of the Director of Counseling, the Counselor Faculty in Student Equity and Success provides intake assessment, crisis intervention, and short-term individual, and couples, and group counseling to students who participate in Student Equity and Success (SEAS) programs. The Counselor works collaboratively with the Student Health and Counseling team, the SEAS team, and campus and community partners in a multidisciplinary approach to help students achieve and maintain optimum wellness.

    The Counselor in SEAS assumes independent responsibility for their cases, including identification of major problems, determining services needed, selecting and using appropriate counseling strategies, assessing results, and, where appropriate, referring to additional services.

    The counselor designs and implements outreach programs and interventions and serves as a liaison to the SEAS programs. The counselor contributes to the overall training of campus staff through workshops and mentorship, and may also provide individual and group supervision to pre-licensed MFT, MSW, and PCC associates.

    This is a temporary, part-time (0.80 time-base) position through August 15, 2025, with the possibility of reappointment.

    Responsibilities

    Counselor Faculty provide clinical services including intake assessment, crisis intervention, short-term individual, group, and couples therapy, and some case management. The Counselor in SEAS also provides outreach programs about mental health, training and consultation for SEAS staff, and debriefing and assistance during University crises as needed.

    Required Qualifications
    • Ability to assess and intervene in crisis situations.

    • Ability to provide short-term individual, couples, and group counseling.

    • Ability to provide education and counseling for substance abuse.

    • Ability to provide debriefing and assistance during university-wide crises.

    • Ability to make presentations to large and small groups on campus, and design outreach programs for SEAS participants.
    • Flexibility to work after hours or on weekends for occasional outreach programs or crisis intervention.
    • Demonstrated ability to connect and communicate effectively with diverse student, faculty, and staff community.


    Minimum Qualifications
    • Possession of an appropriate terminal degree, e.g., a master's or doctorate in behavioral sciences, counseling, psychology or a specific related academic field.

    • Licensed by California Board of Behavioral Sciences as LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, or Clinical Psychologist. Committee will consider license-eligible candidates who are in the process of completing their exams, but candidate must possess valid California license at time of hire.


    Preferred Skills and Knowledge
    • Experience on multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals and primary care clinicians within an integrated center.

    • Experience working in higher education, particularly first generation students of color or affinity programs similar to SEAS, strongly preferred.

    • Experience facilitating both psychoeducational and interpersonal process groups.

    • Experience treating a wide variety of issues, including substance abuse, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, sexual assault, autism spectrum disorders, anger management, sexual disorders, eating disorders, and/or domestic violence.

    • Proficient in electronic scheduling and records

    • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.


    Condition(s) of Employment

    Satisfactory completion of a background check that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment. Cal State East Bay will issue a conditional offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Unsatisfactory results may also affect the continued employment of current Cal State East Bay employees who were conditionally offered the position.
