    POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION

    The Fitness Instructor - Aquatics is responsible for providing instruction to participants of various ages and abilities for water fitness classes. Recreation staff have the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of program participants.

    The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate.

    GENERAL COMPETENCIES

    • Demonstrate knowledge of water fitness class instruction
    • Provide a safe and exercise-enhanced environment for participants
    • Consistently provide excellent guest service
    • Demonstrate excellent communication skills
    • Motivate participants and maintain a high level of energy during classes
    • Demonstrate knowledge of safe heart ratios and perceived exertion scales
    • Utilize warm-up and cool-down exercises to safely engage class in exercises while minimizing injuries

    All employees are expected to provide excellent customer service, communicate in an effective manner both verbally and in writing, display professionalism and integrity, work efficiently, effectively and accurately, work independently and as part of a team, take initiative, solve problems, display good judgment, take ownership for delivering a high-quality product or service, have regular and punctual attendance, and effectively handle emergency situations.

    JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

    Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks

    1. Provides proper instruction of water fitness classes

    2. Sets up and tears down class equipment provided by the center

    3. Monitors heart rate of participants and provides proper warm-up and cool-down exercises

    4. Incorporates strength building and cardio activities into the routine as appropriate for the intended purpose of a class

    5. Interacts with class participants

    6. Maintains regular and punctual attendance

    Other Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Maintains all required certifications

    2. Attends scheduled staff meetings

    Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

    Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications

    Required :
    • First Aid, CPR and AED certification by the first day of actual employment

    Preferred :
    • Previous experience teaching aerobics or water fitness
    • Nationally recognized aerobics or water fitness certification(s) such as AEA, ACE, YMCA, AFAA, APAI, and Silver Sneakers National Water Aerobics Certification

    Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.

    Physical Requirements

    Work performed is physical in nature and involves sufficient physical strength and stamina for:
    • Constant submersion in the water while teaching classes and occasional sitting, standing, and walking throughout pool area to observe patrons during classes
    • Constant near and far acuity to observe pools for possible troubled swimmers and safety hazards; constant hearing to be aware of troubled individuals that may be out of line of sight
    • Occasional lifting of ten (10) pounds from floor to overhead to move equipment and supplies; occasional lifting of up to seventy-five (75) pounds from floor to chest to assist in moving furniture, equipment, and patrons on backboards
    • Occasionally push and/or pull seventy-five (75) pounds to remove individuals from pool area in an emergency situation, and set up bleachers for events and lane ropes for lap swim

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Frequent exposure to pool water. Occasional lifting up to seventy-five (75) pounds and the possible lifting of an injured individual. Frequent exposure to noise levels that may cause distractions. High public contact position requiring adequate spoken interaction with the public and pool guests. Ability to work in a high humidity and heat environment for long periods.

    Required Materials and Equipment

    Water fitness equipment such as belts, barbells, gloves, microphone, and stereo equipment

    Candidates must be legally entitled to work in the United States and must successfully pass a criminal background check, reference check, and substance screen. There may be additional pre-employment requirements depending on the nature of the position.
