    Pay Range: $ 16.07/hr.

    Workdays & Hours: This position will work up to a maximum of 16 hours/week on Saturdays & Sundays; including some evenings or days outside of the normal work schedule as needed.

    A Natural Scientist Assistant is job available with the Park & Recreation Department at the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge. The Parks & Recreation Department maintains approximately 300 parks and public spaces citywide as well as provides recreational activities and educational programming that makes Fort Worth a great place to live, work and play.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • High School diploma/GED.
    • Valid driver’s license.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Credit hours from an accredited college or university with major course work in a natural or physical science, including, but not limited to: biology, geology, botany, range management, environmental science, forestry, or a related field.
    • Certification in a Natural Sciences field or a Teaching Certificate with an emphasis in Science or Environmental Science.
    • Experience conducting educational programs and leading hikes for the public of all ages and working with captive wildlife for educational purposes (handling and husbandry).
    • Demonstrate positive customer service skills over the phone and in person.

    The Natural Scientist Assistant job responsibilities include:
    • Develop and implement educational and recreational programs centering on natural science topics for groups of all ages such as, but not limited to: public school, private school, home school groups, day care centers, educators, summer youth camps, public outreach programs, and more.
    • Assist with the care and maintenance of captive education animals and their exhibits.
    • Lead guided tours in canoes and kayaks along the West Fork of the Trinity River and wetlands located at the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge.
    • Organize and maintain paddling equipment such as canoes, kayaks, life jackets, and paddles.
    • Maintain and create educational exhibits, and produce print form program promotional material using Microsoft Office programs including, but not limited to: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher.
    • Assist Natural Scientists with volunteers and programs.
    • Perform facility opening and closing duties; patrols area to ensure safety procedures are followed.
    • Carry out customer service duties including, but not limited to: greeting visitors, answering phones, answering questions about the Refuge.
    • Fulfill custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, taking out trash.
    • Complete City of Fort Worth trainings including CPR, First Aid, Defensive Driving, Cyber Awareness, Cash Handling.

    Benefits That Are Well Worth It

    Medical Program

    The City offers two plan options through Meritain Health, an Aetna company.

    The Health Center Plan – Offers employees and their family’s

Employees can visit any one of the three City of Fort Worth Employee Health Centers and receive guaranteed same or next day appointments for sick visits. Also, services are available at any one of the five satellite locations that serves employees across the city.

    The Consumer Choice Plan – Is offered to employees at no cost or low monthly premiums to cover eligible dependents and provides the financial benefits of a Health Savings Account (HSA).

    • Preventative services are covered at 100% on both plans.
    • Prescription Drug coverage including mail order pharmacy are also included.

    Vacation

    Eligible for 3 weeks of vacation: After successful completion of probationary period (usually
    6 months), employees may take time off for rest, relaxation, vacation, illness, religious observances, and personal business.

    Holidays

    Available on the first day of employment, the city provides employees with paid holidays, including two personal holidays.

    Wellness Program

    The city’s Healthy Challenge Wellness Program rewards all full-time, benefit-eligible employees on the city’s health insurance. The Healthy Challenge Program utilizes a points system. Participants may earn points throughout the year (Jan. 1-Dec. 15) for completing specific program activities and participants can redeem points at the end of the year for a cash reward. By participating, individuals can earn $150, $200 or $250 by accumulating program points.
