    Water Production Shift Supervisor

    We are currently seeking a Water Production Shift Supervisor to work in our award-winning Water Production facility within our Environmental Services Division.

    In this role, you’ll oversee the weeknight shift operations for Olathe’s drinking water production section and supervise two (2) direct reports. A typical day might include monitoring and operating critical drinking water facilities through a cutting-edge Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, collaborating with the team to troubleshoot operational challenges, and mentoring, training, and evaluating assigned staff. You’ll be part of team that works to ensure that clean, safe drinking water meets or exceeds state and federal regulations.

    Experience in the water treatment industry is a valued asset. Compensation will be based on individual experience. Pay Range is $30.50 to $43.36/hour and is based on qualifications and experience.

    Schedule: 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM, Monday through Thursday. The work week begins Monday evening at 9:00 PM and ends Friday morning at 7:00 AM. Employees on this shift receive a shift differential of $2.50/hour.

    The Water Operations Team Supervisor supervises, assigns, reviews and oversees the activities and operations of assigned staff. They provide functional and technical leadership to staff on assigned shift to perform a variety of skilled technical and maintenance related duties in the operation and maintenance of the City’s water treatment plant, water supply wells, and distribution storage and pumping facilities.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Supervises, assigns, trains, and evaluates assigned staff; oversees daily work tasks; develops goals and tracks progress; coaches and mentors; oversees training; evaluates for promotions; participates in or leads the performance evaluation process for employees assigned to them under the supervision of the Water Production Superintendent.
    • Inspects, monitors, and documents plant and remote facility operations by reading and interpreting information provided by the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, meters, gauges, and other field instrumentation; performs general plant facility maintenance including cleaning and repairing plant facilities; performs visual checks of pumps, valves, motors and other equipment; collaborates with operations and maintenance team; leads plant process and equipment troubleshooting based on water quality information and SCADA trends; makes operational decisions to maintain regulatory compliance; operates the water supply wells, water treatment plant, and distribution system within established operational goals and regulatory compliance parameters.
    • Collects samples and performs a variety of process and regulatory water quality tests as part of a certified field laboratory; completes associated documentation for sample collection and analysis; interprets water quality data to improve plant process; works closely with the City’s Environmental Laboratory on testing requirements and techniques.
    • Maintains accurate plant operation logs and reports; performs and documents mathematical calculations; utilizes a variety of software applications such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word), Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) database, Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS), and the SCADA system; communicates to management and maintenance staff any issues that could compromise operations or regulatory compliance.
    • Operates assigned vehicles and equipment such as fork-lifts and pallet jacks for chemical receiving; assists with snow removal including driving a snowplow as required; drives to remote sites for sample collection, monitoring, troubleshooting, and other tasks as required; adheres to safe work practices and procedures; reviews chemical safety data sheets; demonstrates proper use of safety equipment, including a cartridge respirator, confined space entry and fall protection equipment; participates in required safety training.
    • Works weekends, holidays, evenings and nights as required; performs overtime as required.


    Qualifications

    Experience: Four years of increasingly responsible experience in operating water treatment and distribution facilities is required. Experience supervising the work of direct reports is preferred.

    Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Specialized education in an applied science field is preferred.

    Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. A Class IV Water Operator Certification with the State of Kansas is required.

    Environmental or Physical Demands: The Water Process Team Supervisor will perform work inbothindoorandoutdoorenvironments and will be subjectto adverse weather conditions and noise. The work requires routine and frequent sitting, walking, standing, twisting, bending, kneeling, and climbing and descending ladders and stairs. Employees in this role will push, pull, and lift heavy objects and equipment including empty and charged fire hoses, plastic and metal 55-gallon drums. They will operate a variety of hand and tools and will use dollies or hand trucks to move pallets and drums. The position requires the ability to move between multiple locations, often multiple times in a day. Site locations may expose the individual to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, various forms of precipitation, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, toxic agents, pathogenic substances, and other hazards. Some tasks are performed in areas where the ground is uneven and/or water soaked. Job functions in and around excavations, confined spaces, mechanized equipment, roadways, and bodies of water present the need for alertness and safety awareness. The work requires the ability to see, hear, and smell in order to detect problems and ensure the safety of employees and others in response to exposure to the hazards associated with this position.
