The Olathe Fire Department is looking for a Public Education Specialist to assist with our fire education programs in the schools, various community events that promote fire education and our Smoke Alarm program. This position requires the ability to climb a ladder, safely lift up to 40 lbs and to remain on your feet for 3-4 hours at a time.
For more details, review the full job details and requirements below.The Public Education Specialist coordinates and delivers the fire department’s public education and outreach programs which are intended to help prevent fires and injuries. This work includes working with the community to help citizens and visitors learn how to become safer at work, home or play.
Key Responsibilities- Plans, coordinates and implements public education programs and activities about hazard risk reduction; coordinates activities with schools, businesses and other agencies.
- Develops curriculum and programs about fire prevention & life safety to meet the needs of residents.
- Designs, develops and maintains educational and other departmental materials utilizing desktop publishing and computer equipment.
- Prepares a variety of reports and statistics on fire education services and activities; recommends new programs; analyzes data and identifies trends.
- Submit budget recommendations for public education activities; monitor budget.
- Coordinate and oversee programs working collaboratively with Fire Department personnel; assigns and schedules school visits, station tours and public relations events.
- Coordinates the Fire Department’s open house and other events promoting fire education.
QualificationsExperience:A minimum of two years of increasingly responsible work in education, public safety, communications, public relations or related programs is required. Experience with digital and internet-based communication and program delivery is preferred.
Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in education, fire safety, public administration, communications, nursing, emergency medicine or a related field is required.
Licenses & Certifications: Possession of a valid Driver’s License is required. Possession of or the ability to obtain a CPR instructor certification through the American Heart Association within six months is preferred. Possession of or ability to obtain a Fire and Life Safety Educator certification within 12 months is also preferred.
