    The Position

    The Board of Supervisors have authorized the following future salary increases:

    5% on July 1, 2024
    5% on July 1, 2025


    Bargaining Unit: Local 856 - Health Services Unit

    Contra Costa County Health Services Department is accepting applications to fill several Laboratory Technician positions, which may be assigned to the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez or Health Centers located in East, West and Central County.

    Laboratory Technician ll is the journey-level position in this classification series. Under supervision, the Laboratory Technician assists licensed and certified personnel in specimen collection and processing. Incumbents collect blood and urine samples from patients and process these specimens including entry and receipt of specimens in Laboratory Information Systems; in addition to assisting Clinical Laboratory Scientists with performing testing in hematology, chemistry, microbiology, parasitology, immunology, virology, mycobacteriology, mycology, urinalysis, coagulation, and performing other related work as required.

    The employment list established as a result of this examination may remain in effect for six (6) months.

    Typical Tasks

    • Collects blood and urine samples from patients and processes these specimens including entry/receipt of specimens in Laboratory Information System (LIS), centrifugation, and distribution/sending to reference laboratories
    • Assists Clinical Laboratory Scientists in the performance of testing in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis and other areas as assigned. Results are verified by a scientist
    • Assists physician in the obtaining and staining of bone marrow specimens
    • May be assigned to assist the Pathologist in the conduct of autopsies
    • May provide training and work direction to Laboratory Technician I
    • Assists laboratory scientists to maintain testing equipment
    • Prepares various reagents and specimens for testing and analysis by licensed and certified personnel
    • Makes gram stains and streaks culture plates
    • May prepares specimens for transportation from collection sites to main laboratory and receives specimens from collections sites at the main laboratory
    • Monitors room and refrigerator temperatures
    • Greets patients, customers, members of the public and other County staff; answers phones and performs other duties as required
    • Provides and promotes excellent customer service for all internal and external customers
    • Performs record keeping, labeling, filing and other related duties
    • Receives and stores laboratory supplies and assists in maintaining inventory
    • Assists in the entry of reference laboratory and point of care results
    • Assists in laboratory data collection


    Minimum Qualifications

    License: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Out of state valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License will be accepted during the application process.

    Certificate: Must possess and maintain a current, valid Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) Certificate issued by the State of California Department of Public Health Laboratory Field Services Branch.

    Experience: One (1) year of full-time, or its equivalent, experience drawing blood.

    Other Requirements: A background investigation/fingerprint and/or physical exam may be required prior to the start of employment.

    A COMPLETED SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE IS REQUIRED. AN APPLICATION SUBMITTED WITHOUT THE SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE WILL BE CONSIDERED INCOMPLETE AND WILL THEREFORE BE DISQUALIFIED.

    Selection Process

    2. Application Evaluation: Depending on the number of applications received, an Application Evaluation Board may be convened to evaluate and select the best-qualified candidates for invitation to the next phase of the examination.

    3. Training and Experience Evaluation: Consists of an evaluation of each candidate's relevant education, training and/or experience as presented on the application and supplemental questionnaire (Weighted 100%).

    The examination steps noted above may be changed in accordance with the County's Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.

    CONVICTION HISTORY
    After you receive a conditional job offer, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you have received a conditional job offer. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with Contra Costa County. If you accept a conditional job offer, the Human Resources department will contact you to schedule a fingerprinting appointment.

    DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
    All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
