    Minimum Qualifications

    Four years of full-time experience* in motor equipment under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

    When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

    *If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.

    Duties Description

    Under the supervision of the Regional Park Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent will perform a variety of journey-level motor vehicle mechanic tasks for the Genesee Region. Duties will include:
    • Repair and maintain passenger vehicles, pickup trucks, utility terrain vehicles, and heavy equipment including backhoes, tractors, skid steer loaders as well as auxiliary, electric, and hydraulic equipment attachments.
    • Responsible for repairs and preventive maintenance of various grounds and small engine equipment including rotary and flail mowers and two cycle small equipment.
    • Conduct thorough inspections meeting the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles certification standards, maintaining detailed records of all inspections and repairs.
    • May also assist in skilled and semi-skilled tasks such as welding and fabricating.
    • Assist with tree removal/pruning operations that require the operation of chippers, stump grinders, and lift equipment as needed.
    • Operate equipment including snowplows and tractors.
    • Assign, supervise, review, train, and evaluate assigned seasonal staff.

    Additional Comments

    OPERATING NEEDS:
    • Must be able to work a variable schedule which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
    • Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License that allows the candidate to legally operate commercial vehicles in New York State or obtain one within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.***
    • Must possess a certification by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles to conduct class 1 and class 2 NYS inspections or obtain one within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.
    • Must be proficient in the use of hand tools, portable power tools, and shop equipment.
    • Must have the ability to measure and test instruments.
    • Must have the physical ability to carry tools and materials considerable distances to work sites inaccessible by vehicle when needed and be able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
    • Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and complete equivalent training to Game of Logging 1,2 and 3 during the next available training session.

    ***Under the provisions of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive. The candidate is required to participate in pre-employment, random and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.
