DEFINITION Receives training and practical experience in the technical aspects of fingerprinting and fingerprint classification work.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS Positions allocable to this entry level class are assigned to the Sheriff Department's Fingerprint Identification Unit and, under close supervision, receive instruction and on-the-job training in classifying, filing, searching, coding and maintaining records for fingerprint identification. Activities are of a progressively more responsible and technical nature including all phases of the Fingerprint Identification Unit work. Incumbents are required to work flexible hours, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
Essential Job FunctionsAnalyzes daily criminal, custody, registrant, deceased, applicant and identification, booking submissions of fingerprints and palm prints within the Los Angeles County Multi-Modal Biometric System (MBIS).
Evaluates the quality of friction ridge impressions, sets/corrects core and axis, or sequencings on fingerprints submitted by the County's Live Scans, and performs visual analysis, comparison, evaluation, and verifications.
Performs visual inspections of various images for quality purposes within the MBIS, i.e., facial and Iris recognition.
Examines various data systems, to verify fingerprints with any previous file of an arrestee or applicant are from the same source.
Handle searches and comparisons involving manual submissions of friction ridge impressions from various law enforcement requestors.
Interact with a variety of law enforcement personnel from LASD and external agencies.
RequirementsMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Option I: Completion of a recognized* accredited course in fingerprint interpretation and classification**
Option II: Three (3) months experience classifying fingerprints according to the Henry Classification System.
LICENSEA valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASSPhysical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION*Recognized accredited courses in fingerprint interpretation and classification refers to courses taken at accredited institutions.

The questionnaire contains pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigative process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait for twelve (12) months from the date of disqualification in order to reapply.
Additional InformationEXAMINATION CONTENTThis examination will consist of two (2) parts:
PART I A computerized multiple-choice test covering reading comprehension, written expression, data analysis and interpretation, checking for errors, and pattern recognition weighted 60%.
PART II A performance test evaluating the ability to interpret and classify fingerprint weighted 40%.
CANDIDATES MUST BRING A FINGERPRINT GLASS AND RIDGE COUNTER FOR THE PERFORMANCE TEST. Candidates will take the computerized multiple-choice test and performance test on the same day. However, only candidates who pass the written test will have their performance test scored.
THE MULTIPLE-CHOICE AND PERFORMANCE TESTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19. CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON EACH WEIGHTED PART OF THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE LIST. TRANSFER OF TEST COMPONENTS Applicants who have taken identical components recently for other exams may have their responses automatically transferred to this examination.
This examination contains test components that may be used in the future for new examinations and your test responses may be transferred.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATIONThe names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months following the date of promulgation.

Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.
