    The Position
    Palo Alto Children’s Theatre seeks a Production and Teen Arts Council Associate (Arts & Science Technician -H) to support the needs of teen leadership meetings and events, as well as a year-round theatrical season, in various areas of programming, which may include: 1) Main Stage Season, a season of seven professionally realized theatrical productions, on both indoor and outdoor stages; 2) Playhouse Production Series, featuring teen performers, presenting fairy-tales for pre-k audiences; 3) Outreach Initiatives, serving Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD) elementary schools with on-site theatrical productions for grades 3 - 5; and 4) Summer Camp productions, for youth age 8 and up.

    Work Hours and Schedule
    This is an hourly position with an average of 20 hours per week. Must have a flexible schedule and availability to work afternoons, evenings, and weekends for rehearsal and performance coverage.

    Palo Alto Children’s Theatre exists to nurture the intellectual, artistic, and personal development of youth through multi-arts education, performing opportunities, and extraordinary theatre experiences. At the Children's Theatre, the process and product are of equal importance in creating excellent theatre for young audiences. Through multi-arts education, the Children’s Theatre develops lifelong skills such as critical and creative thinking, cooperation, and aesthetic sensitivity. A theatre and an educational institution, the Children’s Theatre provides classes and programming designed to provide hands-on learning experiences for youth aged 3 through high school. This invaluable teaching tool develops skills and provides an excellent opportunity to develop participants’ theatrical knowledge. Performing arts education opportunities include onsite classes, camps and production experiences, as well as theatrical Outreach Productions (grades 3-5) and Dance In Schools classes (grades K-2) in all twelve PAUSD Elementary Schools.

    The Teen Arts Council is a drop-in leadership group that meets weekly during the school year, and hosts events for teens on a monthly (or semi-monthly) basis.

    This is an SEIU Hourly (limited-benefits) position that is budgeted to not exceed 1,000 hours per fiscal year. The number of hours per week and schedule will be determined based on assignment.

    Essential Duties:

    The Production and Teen Arts Council Associate (PTACA) is part of the Children's Theatre production team. This team needs to maintain a professional work ethic and set a positive example for participants, particularly when it comes to punctuality and communication. The PTACA should be someone who is comfortable creating and keeping schedules, is able to be diplomatic when having what can sometimes be challenging conversations with participants and can act as a mentor to youth technicians and teen leadership participants who are part of the theatre's programs.

    Under the supervision of the Associate Production Manager, daily tasks will vary, but basic duties include:
    For the TAC:
    Provide support for teens in weekly meetings, event set up and strike, gathering and maintaining an inventory of resources, meeting promotional schedules for events, and scheduling City spaces for events.

    For Production:
    • Provide backstage and other support throughout the rehearsal process and at required performances to ensure the safety and productivity of all youth participants.
    • Prepare rehearsal, performance, class and camp spaces as needed.
    • Oversee the check-in/check-out process of production participants.
    • Provide instruction and mentorship to youth production crew and stage managers.
    • Troubleshoot technical issues that may arise throughout the production (tasks may include but not limited to changing lamps, minor scenic repairs, etc.).
    • Assist in servicing Children's Theatre events both on and off-site.
    • May include providing technical support in productions and summer camps.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to fulfill the duties of the PTACA would typically be acquired through:
    • Prior stage technician background (may be gained through college, community or professional theatre experience), plus experience working with youth and/or teens in an educational or performing arts setting.
