    Minimum Qualifications
    Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus eight (8) years of experience in a construction or traffic control role, including four (4) years of experience which were in a supervisory or lead capacity.
    • Education may substitute for experience up to two (2) years.


    Licenses or Certifications:
    • Must have a Texas Commercial Driver License or ability to obtain within five (5) months of employment or approved extension by Department Director or designee.
    • Valid Texas Driver License.
    Notes to Applicants
    The Signs and Markings Technician Supervisor will oversee and manage the daily operations of traffic sign fabrication and field personnel performing signs, markings, and banners installation and maintenance of traffic control devices. This position will coordinate between the operational field technicians, other supervisors, and division management to ensure work is properly scheduled, resourced, tracked, and reported to ensure performance measures are met. This position will provide support directly to personnel in the field and must be experienced in both signs and markings installation and maintenance.

    Driving Requirement:
    This position requires a Valid Texas Class C Driver License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. Must have a Texas Commercial Driver License or ability to obtain within five (5) months of employment or approved extension by Department Director or designee.

    This position requires a Valid Texas Driver License or the ability to acquire one by you rhire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite . To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

    Preferred Experience:
    • Experience coordinating between multiple sections, divisions and/or departments.
    • Experience with scheduling and time management strategies within an operational work group.
    • Experience leading staff to work together to accomplish a common goal.
    • A working knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices ( TXMUTCD ).
    • Experience using conflict management techniques to successfully resolve issues.
    • Experience using, or working knowledge of: Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, Knack or other Asset Management systems.
    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
    Manages field operations and staff for Signs & Markings Division, including scheduling of equipment, tools, materials, and staff resources. Interacts with project contractors, construction crews, and professional engineers. Performs quality assurance activities to ensure projects are carried out and engineered in accordance with City, State, and Federal laws. Relays project status and resource needs or requirements. Oversees and manages the maintenance and inventory of materials, supplies, vehicles, and equipment. Responds to and resolves questions or issues and adopts contracts and project plans as necessary. Provides training on safety and leadership techniques to staff. Reviews engineer drawings and plans to ensure that signs and markings projects are carried out as planned and in accordance with the City, State, and Federal regulations. Serves as project coordinator of contractors on signs and markings contracts. Oversees inventory and purchasing for work group.

    Responsibilities- Supervision and/or Leadership Exercised:
    • Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
    • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local codes; City practices, policies, and procedures including supervisory/management, construction, customer service, DIG TESS ; and quality assurance, safety procedures and policies including ATSSA and TMUTCD .
    • Knowledge of effective principles and practices of leadership and supervisory techniques.
    • Knowledge of purchasing and inventory control.
    • Skill in managing multiple tasks and prioritizing.
    • Skill in complex oral and written communication in a variety of formats.
    • Skill in the installation of Bike Corral / Racks, Road Cushions, Traffic Legends and Symbols, and Vertical delineation devices.
    • Skill in the layout of Roadway Markings Plans.
    • Skill in the use of fabrication equipment, fabrication software design programs, and CAD programs, monitoring and tracking of other related databases and systems used for providing updates and reports.
    • Skill in the use of hand tools.
    • Ability to accurately log and report work progress, materials, labor hours, etc. with or without the use of computer software.
    • Ability to effectively explain policy to employees, supervisors, and managers in a professional manner and resolve conflicts.
    • Ability to effectively manage projects and delegate responsibilities.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and the public in a supervisory capacity.
    • Ability to interpret complex engineering plans, work orders, schematics, and regulations.
    • Ability to maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
    • Ability to supervise, train, monitor, evaluate, and provide feedback on the work of others.
    • Ability to operate, maintain and/or install drill/driver machine, and other appropriate equipment.
    • Ability to perform Striper Coning functions.
    • Ability to train others on the testing and calibration of instruments to make precision and close tolerance repairs and adjustments.
    • Ability to use cell phones, two-way radios, and other communications equipment.
